80% lactic acid is a natural organic acid of vegetable origin, obtained by fermentation of carbohydrates (e.g. corn or sugar beet). It is one of the most widely used AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) in cosmetics, where it is mainly used for its exfoliating, moisturizing and pH-regulating properties. It is naturally produced in the skin as part of the metabolism and is part of the so-called Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), so it is very well tolerated and effective in restoring a healthy skin barrier.
Gently exfoliates dead skin cells and softens the skin surface.
Hydrates by binding water in the skin.
Improves skinelasticity and overall appearance.
Regulates the pH of cosmetic products, thus increasing their stability.
Promotes cell renewal and stimulates the skin's natural regeneration.
skin tonics and serums with AHA acids
anti-ageing creams and emulsions
skin lightening and brightening products
peeling masks and treatments
shampoos and hair treatments for pH regulation
deodorants and intimate hygiene products
Solubility: completely soluble in water, partially soluble in alcohol.
Recommended dosage:
as an active ingredient in skin cosmetics: 1-10 % (higher concentrations may be irritating)
as pH regulator: as needed to achieve the desired pH value
Incorporation: added to the aqueous phase on cooling, or directly at the end of the formulation to adjust the pH.
Heat resistance: process at lower temperatures (< 40 °C) to avoid degradation of the active substance.
80% lactic acid is a versatile cosmetic raw material that combines exfoliating, moisturising and pH-stabilising effects and is therefore an indispensable ingredient in modern skin and hair care formulations.
The safety level of the raw material according to the EWG: 2-5 depends on the use 2 if lactic acid is used in products with a low risk of inhalation (e.g. creams, serums, liquid products and 5 if it is used in products that can be inhaled (sprays, powders), due to the risk of respiratory irritation.
Is lactic acid suitable for sensitive skin?Yes, but only in very low concentrations (1-3%) and when the pH of the formulation is properly adjusted. Higher concentrations may cause redness or irritation.
Can I use it as a preservative?No, lactic acid does not have a sufficient preservative effect, but it is often combined with other preservatives as it helps to maintain the optimum pH for their effectiveness.
How is lactic acid different from glycolic acid?Lactic acid has a higher molecular weight than glycolic acid, so it is more gentle and more suitable for sensitive skin.
Is lactic acid vegan?Yes, lactic acid made by fermenting plant-based ingredients is used in cosmetics, so it is also suitable for vegan formulas.
How to dilute lactic acid properly?
If you want to mix a different concentration, follow the formula:
X = (desired concentration 0.5 for 50% x amount you want to mix in g or ml)/original concentration 0.8 for 80%
To make 100 g of 50% concentration from 80% acid, the formula will look like this:
X=(0.5x100)/0.8
X=62,5
So to get 100 g of 50% solution you will need 62.5 g of 80% acid and 37.5 g of water.
To get an accurate result, we recommend weighing the raw materials and not measuring them.
