Pullulan is a naturally occurring, low viscosity polysaccharide that has good adhesive and foaming properties when dissolved in water. Due to these properties, Pullulan can be used to create a pleasant smoothness in skin care, hair care and cleansing products while leaving a natural silicone feel on the skin. Due to its ability to form easily dissolvable films and face masks, Pullulan serves as an effective and stable carrier for active ingredients, colorants and fragrances.

Its key properties in cosmetic products are as follows:

Protective film formation:

• Pullulan forms a soft, non-sticky film on the surface of the skin or hair.
• This film is flexible, breathable and provides protection from external influences.

Firming effect:

• It has an immediate firming and tightening effect, making it ideal for anti-aging products, lifting masks or serums.
• It leaves the skin smooth and taut.

Hydration and protection:

• Helps retain moisture in the skin and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
• Protects the skin from harmful environmental influences.

Stabilizer:

• Acts as a stabilizer in emulsions and increases viscosity in aqueous solutions.
• It is often used as a carrier for active ingredients and improves their penetration.

Pullulan is readily soluble in water and is stable over a wide pH range. Importantly, Pullulan solution is not highly viscous, therefore it does not affect the viscosity when added to solutions.

Pullulan is a safe and non-toxic ingredient. In addition, it is non-comedogenic and does not cause acne.

It is produced by the fermentation of starch by the yeast Aureobasidium pullulans. It is not synthetic and does not use animal products in its production, thus it is considered vegan-friendly.

Recommended dosage: 0.1-5% (3-5% for temporary skin tightening)
