Product description
Coconut laundry soap
Coconut laundry soap is a solid soap for washing laundry, pre-treating and removing stains, not for use on skin. Soap made from coconut oil cleans and lathers more strongly than soaps made from common fats, even in cooler water. It is chosen mainly by those who make a homemade laundry detergent without unnecessary additives, or who need a reliable bar for hand washing and for treating soiled spots before machine washing.
Why coconut soap
- Strong cleaning power – soap made from coconut oil contains mostly shorter-chain fatty acids, which release grease and ordinary dirt from fibres well, even at lower water temperatures.
- Rich lather – it lathers quickly and abundantly, which is practical for hand washing and pre-treating. In a washing machine, on the other hand, it is a reason to use it sparingly.
- Base for homemade recipes – grated soap is the most common soap ingredient in homemade washing powder or gel, where it is combined with washing soda and, where appropriate, other ingredients.
- Solid form without water – a solid bar is economical to store and transport and is used up gradually, as needed.
How to use it
Hand washing and stains. Wet the soiled spot, rub it with the soap and leave it to work for a short time. Then wash it by hand or put it in the washing machine. This method works well on collars, cuffs, greasy stains and ordinary soiling on children’s clothes.
Homemade washing powder. Grate the soap finely (fine grater or food processor) and mix it with washing soda (sodium carbonate). Washing soda softens the water and increases the effectiveness of the soap, so a mixture without it is less effective in hard water. Exact proportions depend on water hardness, the type of washing machine and the degree of soiling. Start with a smaller amount and adjust according to the result.
Homemade laundry gel. Grated soap is dissolved in hot water and thickens as it cools. The consistency of the gel changes with the ratio of soap to water and it may thicken further over time, so stir it or dilute it before use.
Grated soap is used more effectively in a washing machine if you dissolve it beforehand in a small amount of hot water and pour it directly into the drum. Dry shavings may not dissolve completely on short programmes and at low temperatures.
Good to know
Hard water. Like any soap, coconut soap reacts with calcium and magnesium salts in hard water and forms insoluble residues. This shows as a greyish tinge on laundry and a coating in the washing machine. Adding washing soda helps, as does an occasional wash with vinegar in the fabric softener compartment.
How much to use in a washing machine. Because it lathers strongly, you need less than with ordinary washing powder. Excess foam can trigger the machine’s protective modes and impair rinsing.
Delicate fabrics. The soap is alkaline, so for wool, silk and delicate coloured fabrics, first test the effect on a hidden spot.
After hand washing. Let the soap dry in the air. In standing water it softens and is used up more quickly.
This is a laundry soap, not a soap for washing skin. For hand washing we recommend gloves, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin on your hands.
