Product description
Ascorbyl Glucoside is a stable vitamin C derivative that is formed by combining ascorbic acid with glucose (2-O-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid). In practice, it is a raw material produced by a biotechnological/enzymatic process (glycosylation), which yields a bio-based form of vitamin C with better stability in formulations and a lower tendency towards undesirable darkening compared to pure ascorbic acid. On the skin, it behaves like a “vitamin C pool” – the enzyme α-glucosidase present on the membranes of skin cells gradually cleaves the bond and releases active vitamin C over time, which supports a more long-lasting effect without the strong “shock” typical of less stable forms.
Key benefits
- Evening of skin tone and support of brightening – helps reduce melanin formation through tyrosinase inhibition.
- Support in lightening existing pigmentation – the released vitamin C can participate in reduction mechanisms in melanin.
- Antioxidant protection – helps reduce oxidative stress and supports the skin’s defenses after UV exposure.
- Anti-age effect – supports collagen production and improvement in the appearance of fine lines with regular use.
- Formulation stability – compared to pure vitamin C, it is more suitable for standard emulsions and aqueous systems where more stable performance is required.
- High tolerability – in formulations it is generally perceived as a mild and gentle vitamin C derivative.
Suitable for products such as
- Serums and facial emulsions for brightening and evening skin tone.
- Creams for pigment spots and uneven skin tone.
- Anti-age products (day/night creams, concentrates).
- After-sun and regenerating products after sun exposure.
- Products with SPF (supporting antioxidant component).
- Cleansing products (mild cleansing gels/cleansing waters) with appropriate pH adjustment.
Use in formulation
- Soluble in: water (aqueous phase).
In practice, it is recommended to dissolve it in part of the water/hydrolate while mixing, and only then add the remainder of the phase. - Recommended dosage: typically 0.5–2.0% for daily use; for specific products it is possible to go higher (depending on the target and the tolerability of the formulation).
- Recommended pH of the finished formulation: typically 5.5–7.0 (suitable for most facial care products).
- Compatible with: O/W emulsions, gels, aqueous serums and hydrating systems.
- Stabilisation tips: at higher dosages or higher manufacturing temperatures, the use of buffers (e.g. citrate system) and antioxidant auxiliaries helps to limit colour changes.
Safety and storage
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes; in case of accidental contact, rinse with water.
- For sensitive skin, we recommend testing the tolerability of the finished product on a small area.
- Store in a well-closed container, in a dry place, at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.
FAQ
The best approach is to add it gradually into stirred water (or a portion of the aqueous phase) and allow sufficient time for hydration. If clumps appear, sieving the powder or preparing a concentrated solution in a smaller volume of water followed by dilution will help.
Pre-hydrating the powder in glycerin or another glycol and only then mixing with water is also helpful.
Common combinations include humectants (glycerin, betaine, hyaluronic acid), barrier-supporting components (ceramides) and soothing extracts. For multi-active serums, it is advisable to prepare trial batches for stability and sensory assessment.
Colour changes are usually associated with oxidation or thermal stress. It helps to limit air exposure, use suitable packaging (airless), add antioxidant auxiliaries and adhere to the recommended pH.
It is not ideal, since it is a water-soluble raw material. For oil serums, oil-soluble vitamin C derivatives are usually chosen or a two-phase system is used.
Packaging that limits exposure to air and light is preferred (airless or opaque bottle). For aqueous serums, good compatibility with the preservative system is also important.
