Product description

Coco-Caprylate/Caprate is a light, “dry” vegetable emollient – a mixture of esters formed by esterification of fatty alcohols from coconut oil with caprylic and capric acids (C8/C10). In cosmetics it is used as a modern alternative to silicones: it improves spreadability, reduces the greasy feel and gives the product a pleasant, velvety slip without a heavy film.

Key benefits

  • Light, “dry” emolliency – does not leave a heavy greasy feel.
  • Silicone-like effect in more natural formulations: smooth slip and velvety finish.
  • Improves spreading of creams, butters, balms and oil serums.
  • Softens and smooths the surface of skin and hair (better product sensoriality).
  • Helps reduce tackiness and heaviness of richer oil phases.

Suitable for products such as

  • Body creams and lotions, light face creams and emulsions.
  • Oil serums, dry oils and massage blends with a “non-greasy” feel.
  • Lip balms and protective sticks (improved slip and comfort).
  • Make-up and colour cosmetics (better pigment spreading, more pleasant finish).
  • Hair care products – conditioners, leave-in products, oil treatment blends.

Use in formulation

  • Soluble in: oils and fats (lipid phase).
  • Miscible with: vegetable oils, butters, ester emollients and most lipid ingredients.
  • Compatible with: common emulsifiers and preservative systems used in emulsions (with appropriate pH and formula design).
  • Recommended dosage: as a guideline 2–20 % depending on product type (lower for light face/body creams, higher for balms and oil-based products).
  • Technological notes: add to the oil phase; helps improve sensoriality even with a higher content of heavy butters and waxes.

    Safety and storage

    • Avoid contact with eyes; in case of contact, rinse with water.
    • Follow normal hygiene practices during handling and use clean tools.
    • Store in a well-closed container, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
    • Keep out of reach of children.

    FAQ

Is Coco-Caprylate/Caprate suitable as a replacement for silicones in hair products?

Yes, it is often used to enhance slip and the feel of “smoothed” hair. However, it does not behave identically to silicones – the result depends on the overall formula and hair type.

Can it reduce the “greasy” feel in products with a higher oil content?

Yes, it belongs among emollients that significantly improve the sensorial profile of oil blends and help create a drier, lighter finish.

Will it affect the stability of an emulsion if I add it to a cream?

It can change the viscosity and behaviour of the oil phase. At higher dosage it is advisable to verify stability (heat/cold cycles, centrifuge) and, if necessary, adjust the emulsifier or fat content.

Is it suitable for lip balms and sticks?

Yes, it improves slip and comfort during application. In sticks, however, it may soften the structure, so it is advisable to fine-tune the ratio of waxes and hard butters.

Is this emollient also suitable for oilier or acne-prone skin?

It is often used in light emulsions and “dry” oils, but suitability depends on individual tolerance and the overall composition. For problematic skin it is recommended to test the finished product on a smaller area first.
