Aloe Vera Gel, 200 g

Aloe vera gel is a ready-to-use aqueous gel made from the leaf juice of Aloe barbadensis, thickened with carbomer and preserved. In formulation it acts as a humectant and active ingredient: it binds water, promotes hydration and soothes irritated skin. It can be used directly as a standalone product or as the water phase in custom gels, tonics and light emulsions, at usage levels from 5% to 100%.

Use in formulation

The gel is miscible with water and belongs to the water phase. It is processed cold; the recommended temperature is below 40 °C. It is therefore added to the emulsion only after it has cooled, with continuous stirring.

As a standalone product it is used undiluted, i.e. at a usage level of 100%. In custom formulations it forms the base for gels and tonics, or is added to light emulsions as part of the water phase; the overall usage range is 5–100%. Hydrolats, glycerin, panthenol, allantoin and water-soluble extracts can be mixed in directly.

The recommended pH of the finished formulation is 6.5–7.5. The gel tolerates both neutral and acidic environments.

The product is preserved and, as a standalone item, requires no further preservation. Upon dilution with water or hydrolat, or after adding extracts and other ingredients, the efficacy of the original preservative system is reduced. In that case, address the preservation of the finished product separately and verify it.

Suitable for products such as

• After-sun and after-shave gels – cooling texture without greasiness.
• Facial tonics and hydrating gels – a base for sensitive, dry and acne-prone skin, complemented with hyaluronic acid or panthenol.
• Light hydrating emulsions – as part of the water phase, it contributes a hydrating and soothing component.
• Scalp tonics and hair gels – does not weigh down the hair, suitable for leave-on products for an irritated scalp.
• Shower gels – rinse-off products in which the gel adds a feeling of hydration after washing.
• Gel face masks – both night-time and cooling masks with hydrating active ingredients.

What is good to know

• Clarity – the gel is clear and will retain a transparent texture even after most water-soluble ingredients are added. Oils without a solubiliser will cause cloudiness.
• Leave-on and rinse-off products – suitable for both types, for the face, body, hair and scalp.
• Hygiene when working – when making custom formulations with added ingredients, use clean containers and utensils and verify the preservation of the finished product.
