Product description

Glass medicine bottle, blue, oral sprayer, 50 ml

A blue glass medicine bottle with a volume of 50 ml and a white oral sprayer with an 18/410 neck finish make up a set for thin preparations that are applied in small doses and to a precise spot. The long nozzle of the sprayer directs the contents onto a smaller area or to places that are difficult to reach with an ordinary sprayer: the oral cavity, the scalp through the hair or a chosen spot on the skin. It is suitable for water-based and alcohol-based cosmetic preparations, for example mouth and breath sprays, scalp tonics, hydrosols or light solutions of active ingredients.

Blue glass lets through less light than clear glass, which helps to protect contents that are sensitive to sunlight, for example hydrosols, infusions or solutions with vitamins and plant extracts. Both the bottle and the sprayer are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The set as a whole is not declared suitable for contact with food, so it is intended for cosmetics, not for food or supplement preparations.

What the set is suitable for

  • Mouth and breath sprays – the long nozzle directs the dose straight into the oral cavity; the contents should be water-based or alcohol-based and thin.
  • Scalp tonics and serums – the nozzle reaches through the hair to the scalp, so the preparation is not needlessly sprayed along the lengths.
  • Hydrosols and solutions of active ingredients for local application – a small dose per press makes precise application easier without wetting the surrounding area.
  • Samples and travel packs – the 50 ml volume and the plastic sprayer are suitable for testing a formulation or for a smaller batch.

How the sprayer works

The oral sprayer is a mechanical sprayer with a dip tube that reaches the bottom of the bottle and draws up the contents with every press. One press delivers approximately 0.1 ml, which for a 50 ml fill corresponds to about 500 doses. The nozzle is longer than on an ordinary mechanical sprayer, so the dose does not form a wide cone of mist and is directed onto a smaller area.

The sprayer only sprays thin liquids: water, hydrosols, alcohol solutions, water-based solutions of active ingredients and glycerine in lower concentrations. Thick serums, oils, emulsions and gels will not pass through the nozzle or will block it. For formulations with a higher proportion of glycerine, solubiliser or thickener, we recommend testing the spraying before filling a whole batch.

After screwing the sprayer onto a new fill, it needs several presses to prime before the dip tube and piston fill up. Direct the first doses away from the skin and the oral cavity.

Filling and volume

The bottle has a nominal volume of 50 ml. This is the quantity the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The brimful volume given in the parameters is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them forms a reserve for the dip tube of the sprayer, the air space and the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume. If the bottle is overfilled, the contents are pushed out through the neck when the dip tube is inserted and the sprayer does not seat properly.

The dip tube of the sprayer reaches almost to the bottom of the bottle so that the contents can be used as fully as possible. The last few millilitres are usually not drawn up, so take this into account when calculating the number of doses.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely. Rinse the sprayer by fitting it onto a bottle of clean water or alcohol and pressing it several times, then leave it to drain and dry. Residual water in the dip tube would otherwise dilute the first doses of the contents.

Do not fill the glass with hot contents. Leave hydrosols, solutions and tinctures to cool to room temperature first, and only then pour them into the bottle.

Unpreserved water-based and hydrosol fills have a short shelf life even in dark glass. Blue glass limits the access of light but does not protect against microbial contamination, so a preservative belongs in the water phase just as in any other bottle. A sprayer with a dip tube is a closed system and the contents do not touch your hands during use, which reduces the risk of contamination.

For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils, pure alcohol or solvents, we recommend checking the tightness and behaviour of the sprayer after several weeks of storage, before filling a whole batch.

After washing and disinfection, the bottle and the sprayer can be reused. For fills intended for the oral cavity, it is safer to replace the sprayer with a new one when you change the formulation, because residues in the dip tube and piston cannot be rinsed out completely. For disposal, separate the glass from the plastic sprayer: the bottle belongs with glass, and the sprayer is made of polypropylene (PP).

Closures with the same neck type and other ready-made packaging + closure combinations can be found in the Handymade range. If you combine parts yourself, we recommend checking the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Can the 50 ml glass bottle with oral sprayer be used for a mouth spray?
Yes, the set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and a cosmetic mouth or breath spray is its typical use. The long nozzle directs the dose straight into the oral cavity, and one press delivers approximately 0.1 ml. The set is not declared suitable for contact with food, so it is not used for nutritional or food preparations.
What fills can the oral sprayer spray?
The oral sprayer sprays thin water-based and alcohol-based liquids: hydrosols, tonics, water-based solutions of active ingredients and tinctures. Oils, emulsions, gels and thick serums will not pass through the nozzle or will block it. For fills with a higher proportion of glycerine or solubiliser, we recommend test-spraying a small amount before filling the whole bottle.
Does blue glass protect the contents from light completely?
Blue glass lets through less light than clear glass, but it is not completely opaque. For hydrosols, infusions and solutions of sensitive active ingredients it offers better protection than a clear bottle, but it is still advisable to store the bottle out of direct sunlight. The glass does not protect against microbial contamination, and water-based fills need a preservative.
How much can the bottle with oral sprayer hold?
The bottle is designed for a 50 ml fill, which is its nominal volume. The brimful volume is larger and you will find its value in the parameters; the difference serves as a reserve for the dip tube of the sprayer and the air above the contents. If you fill to the brim, the contents are pushed out through the neck when the dip tube is inserted and the sprayer does not seal.
How do I clean the bottle and the sprayer before reuse?
Wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry. Rinse the sprayer by fitting it onto a bottle of clean water or alcohol and pressing it several times, then leave it to drain. For fills intended for the oral cavity, we recommend replacing the sprayer with a new one when you change the formulation, because the inside of the dip tube and piston cannot be cleaned completely.
What is the difference between an oral sprayer and an ordinary mechanical sprayer?
An oral sprayer has a long nozzle and dispenses a narrow stream onto a small area, while an ordinary mechanical sprayer produces a wider cone of fine mist over the whole face or hair. An oral sprayer is therefore suitable for mouth sprays, the scalp and local application, and a mechanical sprayer for facial mists and tonics over a larger area. Both screw onto the same neck type, provided the thread matches.
