Cosmetic oils: the oil phase to suit the skin type

Plant oils pressed from seeds, kernels and fruit make up the oil phase of creams, serums, balms and massage blends. With 227 items this is the largest raw material section in our shop – from classics such as sweet almond, jojoba and argan oil to specialities like bakuchi, buriti or mustard oil. Each has a different fatty acid profile and a different oxidative stability, which is why each one suits something different.

Which oil for which skin

The quickest route to the right choice runs through the skin you are building the formulation for:

  • Dry skin: richer oils such as avocado, argan or macadamia nourish and rebuild the skin’s lipid film.
  • Oily and blemish-prone skin: light oils high in linoleic acid – grapeseed, hemp, raspberry – absorb quickly and leave no greasy film.
  • Mature skin: restoring oils with antioxidants, above all rosehip and marula.
  • Baby and sensitive skin: gentle sweet almond or apricot kernel oil.
  • Hair: coconut, argan, marula or castor oil for shine, elasticity and the ends.

Virgin, refined or fractionated

Processing is what decides the character of an oil. Virgin cold-pressed oils (marked LZS in their names) keep their nutrients, colour and natural scent; refined oils are neutral, more stable and better value. That is why we keep avocado and hemp in both qualities side by side, including certified organic versions, and coconut oil in three forms at once: virgin organic, neutral refined and fractionated, which stays liquid even in the cold and is among the most stable in the range.

Pack sizes from 50 ml to a 20-litre canister

Of the 227 oils, 184 are in stock right now. Pack sizes start at 50 and 100 ml for trying a formulation out – refined cottonseed oil in 100 ml costs €2.09 – and go up through 5, 10 and 20-litre volumes for production: organic jojoba and fractionated coconut are supplied in 20 l, refined coconut in a 10 l bag-in-box or a 20 l bucket. An SDS and a CoA can be downloaded for every oil. Solid fats for your formulation are among the cosmetic butters, herbal oil infusions among the macerates, and if you are heading for cold process soap, add lye to your oils.

Frequently asked questions

Which oil is best for oily and acne-prone skin?

Reach for light oils high in linoleic acid – grapeseed, hemp or raspberry. They absorb quickly, leave no greasy film and do not weigh the skin down; raspberry adds strong antioxidant protection on top of that. Feel free to combine them with each other in a formulation to balance the fatty acid profile of a light serum or emulsion.

Which oil suits baby and sensitive skin?

Sweet almond oil is the classic – light, readily absorbed and suitable for all skin types, including babies’. Apricot kernel oil is similarly gentle, leaves no greasy film and works well in facial serums and emulsions. For sensitive skin, choose refined versions without a pronounced scent and always try any new formulation on a small area of skin first.

Which oils are suitable for hair care?

Coconut, argan and marula oil are the ones most often used for shine and elasticity, and castor oil for the ends and to strengthen the scalp. They work in masks, oil wraps and serums for the ends – dose them into the oil phase of your formulation or apply them neat before washing your hair.

How much oil goes into a cream or serum?

The oil makes up the oil phase of the emulsion – roughly 5 to 50 % of the formulation, depending on the type of product. A light facial serum takes less, a body cream or massage preparation more. Combine different oils to broaden the spectrum of fatty acids, and protect delicate oils by storing them in the dark and the cold.
