Product description

Floral water, hydrosol from German chamomile in organic quality is a gentle, water-based cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the flowers of the plant Matricaria chamomilla. During distillation, steam passes through the plant material, releasing a small amount of volatile aromatic components and, after cooling, a hydrosol is formed – an aqueous phase with a characteristic scent and a very low content of essential oil.
This hydrosol comes from Bulgaria and is particularly suitable for formulations targeting sensitive, dry, delicate, irritated or reddened skin. In cosmetics it is used as the water phase, as a facial toner or as a soothing component in rinse-off and leave-on products. Thanks to its slightly acidic pH, it fits well into standard facial, body and hair care formulations.

Key benefits

  • Soothing effect on the skin – suitable for cosmetics for skin prone to redness, tightness and irritation.
  • Gentle aqueous raw material – also suitable for sensitive skin and baby/children’s cosmetics when the overall product is properly designed.
  • Supports comfort of dry skin – helps to soften the feeling of tightness in facial toners, creams, lotions and compresses.
  • Suitable base for the water phase – can partially or completely replace distilled water in formulations.
  • Free from ethanol – according to the certificate, its ethanol content is 0, which is advantageous in formulations for delicate and sensitive skin.
  • Characteristic herbal scent – gives products a natural, mildly botanical sensorial profile.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial waters, toners and face mists for sensitive, dry and reddened skin,
  • baby cleansing waters and wet wipes, if the formulation is designed with an appropriate preservative system and pH,
  • creams, facial milks and body emulsions as part of the water phase,
  • soothing gels and serums with aloe vera, panthenol, allantoin or hyaluronic acid,
  • aftershave products and products used after depilation,
  • hair tonics, shampoos and conditioners for sensitive scalp,
  • clay masks and powder masks to be mixed immediately before use,
  • compresses for tired or irritated skin as part of cosmetic care.

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: usually 1 – 100 % depending on the product type; it can make up part or all of the water phase.
  • Soluble in: water and aqueous systems.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, aloe vera juice, glycerin, propanediol, hydrogels and common water-soluble active ingredients.
  • Compatible with: oil-in-water emulsions, aqueous gels, facial toners, rinse-off hair care and gentle cleansing products.
  • Emulsion products: incorporate into the water phase; for heat-processed emulsions, part of the hydrosol may be reserved for the cooling phase in order to reduce unnecessary overheating of aromatic components.
  • It is recommended to add during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • Preservation: when using it in your own formulation, the complete preservative system of the finished product needs to be assessed, especially if the hydrosol is diluted or combined with other water-based raw materials.
  • Formulation pH: according to the certificate, the hydrosol has a pH of approximately 5.80, therefore it is suitable for cosmetics that respect the slightly acidic environment of the skin.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use and for further processing in cosmetic formulations.
  • For sensitive skin or known hypersensitivity to plants from the Asteraceae (daisy) family, it is advisable to carry out a patch test on a small area of skin.
  • Avoid contamination of the contents – use clean utensils, close the container immediately after use and do not pour back material that has already been taken out.
  • Store in a well-closed container, in a dark bottle or away from direct light, in a dry and ventilated place.
  • Protect from direct sunlight, frost and excessive heat; recommended storage is at a temperature below 20 °C.
  • When manufacturing the finished cosmetic product, always verify the final pH, microbiological stability and the suitability of the preservative system.

FAQ

Can chamomile hydrosol be used instead of distilled water?

Yes, in cosmetic formulations it can replace part or all of the water phase. However, if it completely replaces water, you must take into account its natural scent and the fact that it will affect the sensorial properties of the finished product.

Is chamomile hydrosol suitable for leave-on cosmetics?

Yes, it is suitable for leave-on products, for example facial waters, mists, serums, creams or lotions. Correct pH, cleanliness of manufacture and appropriate preservation of the entire formulation are essential.

Can it be combined with hyaluronic acid?

Yes, it is suitable as a water base for both low- and high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. The hydrating gel must be prepared under hygienic conditions and then preserved according to the requirements of the formulation.

Will the hydrosol affect the scent of the finished product?

Yes, it may add a subtle herbal note typical of chamomile. In more strongly fragranced products it may be less noticeable; in unfragranced formulations it will naturally be more pronounced.

Is it necessary to adjust the pH of the finished product?

The pH must always be measured on the finished formulation, not only on the basis of the pH of individual raw materials. Any adjustment depends on the active ingredients, emulsifiers, preservative and the target product type.

Is it also suitable for clay masks?

Yes, it can be used to disperse clay or powder masks immediately before application. A mixture prepared in this way should be used fresh and should not be stored without a proven preservation system.
