Product description

A glass bottle with a shiny black dropper is a complete kit for filling serums, face oils and tinctures dispensed drop by drop. Brown glass protects the contents from light, making it especially suitable for oils, essential oil blends and active ingredients sensitive to oxidation. The dropper with its shiny black collar gives the bottle a uniform dark appearance and allows precise dosing without spilling. The kit with a nominal volume of 50 ml is designed for cosmetic products. The bottle alone holds a food contact certificate, but the dropper does not, so we recommend using the complete kit for cosmetics.

Why brown glass and a dropper

Brown glass transmits significantly less light than clear glass, which slows the degradation of unsaturated oils, vitamins and fragrance components. Glass is also chemically resistant; it does not react with essential oils, alcohol or solvents, so the contents do not absorb foreign odours.

The dropper consists of a shiny aluminium collar, a flexible bulb, a plastic insert and a glass tube. The tube reaches almost to the bottom of the bottle, so the contents can be drawn up even when the level is low. The dropper thread and the bottle neck are of the same type, so the kit is matched and seals when tightened.

Suitable for products such as

  • Face serums – both water-based and oil-based, dispensed drop by drop and benefiting from light protection.
  • Face and hair oils – blends of vegetable oils with a higher proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, which turn rancid more quickly in clear glass.
  • Essential oil blends and fragrance concentrates – glass withstands their dissolving effect, and the brown colour preserves the scent longer.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – the dropper allows small quantities to be measured out.
  • Oil tinctures for nails and cuticles, beard oils – smaller volume and precise dosing.

The kit is less suitable for thick creams and balms, which cannot be drawn up with a dropper. For water-based preparations with a high electrolyte content and for strongly alkaline solutions, we recommend checking the behaviour of the aluminium collar in advance.

Filling and volume reserve

The bottle has a nominal volume for normal filling and a total volume to the brim, which is the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference between them is the reserve taken up by the glass tube of the dropper once screwed in, and which leaves space for the thermal expansion of the contents. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. An overfilled bottle will overflow when the dropper is fitted, or the contents will be pushed into the bulb.

For oil blends, fill at room temperature and attach the dropper only after filling. If you fill with a heated oil phase, let it cool first so that no vacuum forms after closing and the dropper does not draw the contents into the bulb.

Good to know

Preparation before first filling: we recommend washing the bottle and dropper, rinsing with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leaving to dry completely. Traces of water in an oil-based product promote microbial growth and cloudiness.

Repeated use: glass withstands repeated washing and disinfection. The dropper can be cleaned by rinsing with alcohol, but the bulb gradually loses its elasticity, especially in contact with concentrated essential oils. When changing products, we therefore recommend replacing the dropper as well, otherwise scents and oils may transfer.

Dosing: squeezing the bulb draws up the contents; releasing it dispenses them drop by drop. The drop size depends on the consistency of the product, so state the dosing in the instructions for the specific formulation.

Label: the cylindrical shape of the bottle can be wrapped with a label around its circumference. The black collar of the dropper matches both dark and light labels.

Recycling: the empty glass bottle goes into glass recycling. The dropper is a combination of aluminium, plastic, silicone and glass, so separate it from the bottle before recycling.

Glass is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and falls on hard surfaces. Do not heat the filled bottle directly in hot water, and when transporting larger quantities, separate the bottles with padding.

Closures with the same thread type and other ready-made combinations are available in the Handymade range. For custom combinations, we recommend checking the seal and dosing with the specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the brown glass bottle with a dropper protect the contents from light?
Yes, brown glass transmits significantly less light than clear glass and slows the oxidation of oils, vitamins and fragrant substances. It does not replace complete protection, however, so we recommend storing bottles away from direct sunlight and, for sensitive ingredients, adding an antioxidant to the formulation, such as tocopherol.
Is the 50 ml bottle and dropper kit suitable for food?
No, the kit as a whole is not declared for food contact. The food contact certificate applies to the glass bottle alone; the dropper does not have one. The kit is therefore intended for cosmetic products. If you need a bottle for food contents, combine it with a closure that holds a food contact certificate.
How many ml can be filled into the bottle with a dropper?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml, not to the brim. The space above the nominal volume is a reserve for the glass tube of the dropper and for the thermal expansion of the contents. An overfilled bottle will overflow when the dropper is screwed on, and the contents will be pushed into the bulb, where they are difficult to clean.
Can the bottle with a dropper be used for essential oils and tinctures with alcohol?
Yes, glass withstands essential oils and alcohol without any change in properties. With concentrated essential oils, however, prolonged contact stresses the flexible bulb of the dropper, which may gradually harden. For fragrances, we recommend regularly checking the dropper and replacing it when it loses elasticity.
How to clean a glass bottle with a dropper before repeated use?
Wash the bottle with warm water and detergent, rinse with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry neck-down. Rinse the dropper several times with alcohol by drawing up and releasing; do not disassemble the bulb. Remove oil residues with alcohol first, then with water, otherwise a film will settle in the tube.
Is the dropper suitable for water-based serum, or only for oils?
It is suitable for both, as the dropper draws up both thin water-based and oil-based liquids. A water-based serum forms smaller drops than oil, so the same number of drops represents a different quantity. State the dosing for the specific product. Thick gels and creams cannot be drawn up with a dropper.
