Product description

Amber glass medicine bottle with a capacity of 50 ml, supplied with a long plastic dropper insert and a black ribbed safety cap. The set is intended for contents that are dispensed drop by drop and need protection from light: essential oil blends, face and hair oils, oil serums, tinctures, concentrates of active ingredients or fragrance blends for diffusers. Amber glass reduces the light that speeds up the oxidation of oils and the fading of sensitive ingredients. The dropper insert, fitted in the neck, dispenses the contents drop by drop without spilling.

The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. Only the glass medicine bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; as a whole, the set is intended for cosmetics.

What the set consists of

  • 50 ml medicine bottle made of amber glass – it protects the contents from light and has an 18/410 neck finish.
  • Long dropper insert made of polypropylene – it is pushed into the neck of the medicine bottle and dispenses the contents drop by drop when the bottle is tilted.
  • Safety cap made of polyethylene, black and ribbed – the ribbing makes it easier to grip and tighten.

How to use the set

Fill the medicine bottle up to the nominal volume, then press the dropper insert into the neck so that it sits firmly and straight, and finally screw on the cap. When dispensing, tilt the bottle or turn it upside down and the contents come out in individual drops. The dripping speed depends on the viscosity. Thin essential oil blends and alcohol-based tinctures drip quickly, thicker oils more slowly. For very viscous contents, we recommend testing how the dropper insert behaves beforehand, as thick oils pass through it with difficulty.

The dropper insert takes up part of the space in the neck. Therefore, fill the bottle up to the nominal volume and only then fit the dropper insert, otherwise the contents may overflow when it is pressed in.

Before dispatching to your customer, we recommend checking that the cap opens and closes smoothly even after repeated use.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the volume the medicine bottle is designed to hold when filled normally. The total brimful volume is the physical volume up to the rim of the neck and is given in the parameters. The difference between them leaves room for the dropper insert and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

Good to know

  • Preparation before filling – wash the medicine bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely. Fit the dropper insert only into a dry neck, as residual water does not belong in oil-based contents.
  • Glass and heat – let the contents cool before filling. A sudden change in temperature is not good for glass, and warm oil contracts as it cools, so the level drops.
  • Plastic parts and concentrates – the dropper insert is made of polypropylene and the cap of polyethylene. For undiluted essential oils, solvents or highly concentrated blends, we recommend checking the compatibility of the plastic with your specific formulation by a trial filling. After a few weeks, check the tightness and the appearance of the dropper insert.
  • Water-based and alcohol-based contents – the medicine bottle is also suitable for tinctures and toners dispensed drop by drop. Water-based contents without alcohol need a preservative, as the packaging alone does not ensure microbial stability.
  • Reuse – the glass medicine bottle can be used again after washing and disinfection. The dropper insert sits firmly in the neck and may be damaged when removed, so when changing the contents we recommend a new dropper insert and a new cap.
  • Recycling – the glass bottle goes into glass recycling; the dropper insert and the cap are separated before disposal and sorted as plastic.

If you combine the medicine bottle with a different closure or dropper, always check the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation. You can find closures with the same neck type and other ready-made sets in the Handymade range.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 50 ml amber glass medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass filters light and slows down the oxidation of oils and the fading of sensitive ingredients. It is therefore more suitable than clear glass for essential oils, oil serums and tinctures. Protection from light does not replace correct storage, so keep the contents away from direct sunlight and heat.
How much fits in a 50 ml glass medicine bottle with a dropper insert?
The medicine bottle is intended for filling with 50 ml, which is its nominal volume. The physical volume up to the rim of the neck is larger and is given in the parameters. This reserve is taken up by the dropper insert and by the expansion of the contents during warmer storage. If you fill it with more, the contents will overflow when the dropper insert is pressed in.
Is a glass medicine bottle with a dropper insert suitable for essential oils?
Yes, an amber glass medicine bottle with a dropper insert is a common packaging choice for essential oil blends and fragrance blends. Glass does not react with oils and the dropper insert dispenses drop by drop. The dropper insert and the cap are plastic, so for undiluted essential oils we recommend a trial filling and checking the tightness and the condition of the dropper insert after a few weeks.
Can the medicine bottle and dropper insert set be used for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic products. Only the glass medicine bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the plastic dropper insert and the cap do not have one. For homemade oils or syrups, use the medicine bottle together with a closure that is declared for food contact.
Can the 50 ml glass medicine bottle with a dropper insert be reused?
Yes, the glass medicine bottle can be reused after washing and disinfection with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. The plastic parts wear out: the dropper insert may become deformed when pulled out of the neck, and the safety cap gradually loses its firm tightness. When changing the contents, therefore, add a new dropper insert and a new cap to the washed medicine bottle so that the packaging stays tight and dispenses evenly.
Is a medicine bottle with a dropper insert suitable for thick oil or serum?
It depends on the viscosity. Thin oils, essential oil blends and alcohol-based tinctures pass through the dropper insert smoothly. Thick oils or serums with a thickener drip slowly or not at all. For such contents, we recommend testing the dispensing before filling a whole batch, or choosing a closure with the same neck finish that dispenses differently.
