Product description

Green mandarin essential oil is obtained by pressing the peel of green fruits of Citrus nobilis Lour. of European origin. In cosmetics it works primarily as a fragrance ingredient with a fresh citrus character that gives the finished product a refreshing and invigorating note. The manufacturer also attributes cosmetic effects on the skin to it, in particular support for a brighter complexion and a cooling sensation, which is why you will find it in after-sun products, body oils and lip care.

What makes it interesting

  • Citrus fragrance with an invigorating character – according to the manufacturer it evokes a feeling of energy and freshness, which is why it is used in aromatherapy, diffusers, massage oils and bath products.
  • Cooling sensation on the skin – the manufacturer states a refreshing, cooling effect suitable for after-sun products and for preparations that soothe irritated skin.
  • Support for a brighter complexion – according to the manufacturer’s documentation it helps even out skin tone and reduce the visibility of dark spots. The result depends on the whole formulation and the usage rate.
  • Antimicrobial properties – the manufacturer lists them among the functions of the oil. In a formulation, treat them as a complement to the cosmetic effect.
  • Vegan ingredient – it contains no materials of animal origin and is supplied in cosmetic and food grade.

Use in formulations

Like every essential oil, it is not soluble in water; it mixes with vegetable oils and alcohol. In anhydrous products (body oils, balms, massage blends) it is added directly. In emulsions it belongs at the very end of production, once the mixture has cooled. Toners, facial mists or bath salts with a water component need a solubiliser, otherwise the oil separates on the surface.

The recommended processing temperature is below 40 °C. The oil is a blend of volatile compounds, so add it only to the cooled mixture to avoid unnecessary loss of fragrance.

The usage rate is not determined by one universal value but by the IFRA limits for the specific product category, for example lip products, body creams, rinse-off products or candles. Before putting together your formulation, check the limit for your category and keep to it.

In soaps, bath bombs and shower products it serves as a fragrance ingredient. In candles the usage rate follows the IFRA 12 category and the temperature limit applies here as well, so the oil is mixed into the wax only after it has partly cooled.

Suitable for products such as

  • After-sun products and cooling gels – for the cooling and refreshing sensation stated by the manufacturer.
  • Body oils, balms and massage blends – anhydrous systems in which the oil dissolves in a carrier oil.
  • Lip care – lip balms, oils and scrubs, provided the IFRA limit for this category is observed.
  • Facial serums and creams for evening out skin tone – a fragrance ingredient with a complementary cosmetic effect according to the manufacturer’s data.
  • Hair mists and leave-in hair products – according to the manufacturer it leaves a fresh citrus trace in the hair.
  • Soaps, bath bombs, shower gels – rinse-off products with a fresh fragrance.
  • Candles, diffusers and aromatherapy blends – on their own or in combination with other essential oils.

Good to know

The oil contains fragrance allergens under Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. If the stated limits are exceeded, they must be listed on the label of the finished product.

The ingredient is classified under the CLP Regulation as flammable and irritant and contains components classified as CMR (gamma-terpinene, p-cymene). You will find details on classification and safe handling in the safety data sheet, which you should read before working with the oil for the first time.

Do not apply the essential oil to the skin undiluted. Add it drop by drop to a carrier oil or a finished formulation, and if you have sensitive skin, carry out a patch test on a small area.

Frequently asked questions

Is green mandarin essential oil soluble in water?
No, green mandarin essential oil does not dissolve in water. It mixes with vegetable oils and alcohol, and in emulsions it is added at the end of production after cooling. If you want to incorporate it into a toner, facial mist or bath salts with a water component, use a solubiliser at the ratio recommended by its manufacturer. Without it, the oil separates on the surface.
Can green mandarin essential oil be used in leave-on products?
Yes, green mandarin essential oil is intended for both rinse-off and leave-on products. The manufacturer states use on the face, body, hands, lips, hair and scalp, from body oils and balms through facial creams to hair mists. The condition is that you keep to the IFRA limit for the given category, which differs for lip products, facial creams and body oils.
How much green mandarin essential oil can I add to a cream?
The amount of green mandarin essential oil in a cream is determined by the IFRA limit for the given product category, not by one universal value. Facial creams, hand creams, body lotions and lip products fall into different categories with different limits. Check the value for your category before production and keep to it.
Can green mandarin essential oil be added to an emulsion while it is hot?
No, green mandarin essential oil is added to the cooled mixture at a temperature below 40 °C. It is a blend of volatile compounds, and at higher temperatures part of the fragrance components is lost. Stir it into the cream at the end of production together with the other heat-sensitive ingredients.
Is green mandarin essential oil suitable for candles?
Yes, the manufacturer lists green mandarin essential oil among the fragrances suitable for candles and diffusers. The usage rate follows the limit for IFRA category 12. Add the oil only to partly cooled wax, as the recommended processing temperature is below 40 °C. In a fragrance composition it can be used on its own or in combination with other essential oils.
Does a product containing green mandarin essential oil need a preservative?
Yes, every product that contains water needs its own preservative system, even with green mandarin essential oil. The essential oil itself contains no preservative and does not replace one. The manufacturer attributes antimicrobial properties to it, but they do not protect the finished product from microbial spoilage.
