Product description

Bisabolol Alfa Natural 95%

Bisabolol Alfa Natural 95% is a natural alpha-bisabolol obtained by steam distillation from the plant Eremanthus erythropappus. It is added to formulations for three purposes at once: it soothes the sensation of skin irritation, acts as an antioxidant, and brings a sweet, woody fragrance. It is suitable wherever a formulator works with sensitive, reddened, or problematic skin, from facial serums to baby cosmetics.

Key benefits

  • Soothing effect – according to manufacturer data, it helps reduce redness and the sensation of irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin formulations and scalp products.
  • Antioxidant activity – the manufacturer states that bisabolol helps neutralise free radicals and protects the skin from environmental influences.
  • Support for regeneration and skin tone evening – indicated for mature skin care, skin prone to uneven pigmentation, and products for wrinkle reduction.
  • Warming sensation – the manufacturer describes a mild warming effect on the skin, used mainly in massage oils and relaxation creams.
  • Fragrance component – its characteristic sweet, woody scent complements the fragrance profile of the product.
  • Antimicrobial activity – cited as a supporting property; it does not replace a preservation system.

Use in formulation

Bisabolol belongs in the oil phase, but should be added to emulsions during the cooling phase. The recommended processing temperature is below 40 °C, so do not add it to the heated oil phase – add it after the emulsion has cooled, with continuous stirring. In anhydrous products such as facial oils, massage oils, and balms, it simply blends with the other oils.

In aqueous systems (tonics, gels, oil-free serums), it will not dissolve on its own. Either incorporate it via a solubiliser, or use it in an emulsion where it belongs in the oil phase. It tolerates a wide pH range of 4–9, so it works in mildly acidic serums as well as in shampoos and shower products.

Compatibility with common cosmetic raw materials is unrestricted. The manufacturer does not specify a recommended dosage; verify the quantity in the finished formulation.

Add bisabolol as one of the last ingredients, together with essential oils and fragrance compounds, at a temperature below 40 °C.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial serums, creams, and eye creams for sensitive, mature, and problematic skin, where soothing and antioxidant protection are the primary goals.
  • Hand creams and body products with an emphasis on reducing the sensation of irritation.
  • Baby cosmetics – creams, lotions, and oils – where the plant origin is valued.
  • Hair care and scalp products: shampoos, conditioners, and serums intended to soothe the scalp.
  • Deodorants and antiperspirants, intimate hygiene products, shower gels and solid soaps, bath bombs and bath salts.
  • Massage oils and relaxation balms, where the mild warming sensation is utilised.
  • Candles, diffusers, and home fragrances or laundry products, where it serves as a woody fragrance component.

Good to know

The product contains none of the fragrance allergens listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which simplifies the labelling of the finished product. It is vegan, palm-oil-free, and readily biodegradable.

The substance is classified under the CLP Regulation. When working with undiluted bisabolol, follow the safety data sheet. Restrictions for individual product types by IFRA categories can be found in the product parameters.

Frequently asked questions

Is bisabolol water-soluble?
No, bisabolol is oil-soluble and does not dissolve in water. For aqueous products such as tonics or gels, it is therefore added via a solubiliser or used in an emulsion where it belongs in the oil phase. In anhydrous oils and balms, it blends directly.
At what temperature should bisabolol be added to a cream?
Bisabolol should be added at a temperature below 40 °C, i.e. during the cooling phase of the emulsion, not into the heated oil phase. This is the manufacturer's recommended processing temperature. In practice, incorporate it together with essential oils and other heat-sensitive actives shortly before completing the formulation.
Is bisabolol suitable for sensitive skin and baby cosmetics?
Yes, bisabolol is indicated as suitable for sensitive skin and is also used in baby cosmetics. The manufacturer describes it as a soothing agent that helps reduce redness and the sensation of irritation. The product contains no fragrance allergens listed in Annex III of the Cosmetics Regulation; however, we recommend verifying the tolerability of the finished product in the formulation.
Will bisabolol affect the scent or colour of the finished product?
Bisabolol has a characteristic sweet, woody scent and is also considered a fragrance component in formulations. It is colourless to pale yellow, so it will not change the colour of creams and serums. How prominently its scent is perceived depends on the dosage and other ingredients, so verify it in the finished product.
Does bisabolol replace a preservative?
No, bisabolol does not replace a preservation system. A supporting antimicrobial activity and antioxidant action are attributed to it, but every product containing water requires a proven preservative. The antioxidant activity of bisabolol is beneficial for the skin; however, protection of the oil phase against oxidation should be addressed with a separate antioxidant.
