Product description

Glass bottle with a lotion pump in one set: a clear glass medicine bottle with a nominal volume of 100 ml and a white lotion pump with an 18 mm neck, which fits the bottle, so you do not have to search for a matching closure. One press dispenses a small, consistent amount of the contents. You do not touch the product with your fingers, and what remains in the bottle stays clean.

Clear glass shows the colour and the remaining amount of the contents, which is useful for lotions, fluids or body creams with a lighter texture. Glass does not react with common cosmetic ingredients and can be washed and disinfected repeatedly. The set as a whole is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the pump does not have one, so the set is intended for cosmetic products.

What the set is suitable for

The lotion pump is designed for contents that can be pumped, that is, emulsions of medium and lower viscosity. Among products you make yourself, these mainly include:

  • Face lotions and fluids – light O/W emulsions pass through the tube and valve without problems, and the dose per press corresponds to a usual facial application.
  • Body lotions and hand creams – the pump allows one-handed dispensing, which is handy in the bathroom as well as at a work table.
  • Serums with a gel or cream texture – for thicker serums, a pump is more suitable than a dropper, and the contents do not flow back.
  • Light leave-in conditioners and curl creams – if they are not too thick, the pump dispenses them without difficulty.

Thick ointments, balms with a high proportion of wax or solid butters will not pass through the pump. For such products, a jar or a bottle with a cap is more suitable.

How to use the set

The bottle is filled up to the nominal volume of 100 ml, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck and can be found in the parameters. The difference between them is a reserve for the tube and the pump body, which push part of the contents upwards once screwed in, and also room for the emulsion to expand with temperature changes. If the bottle is filled to the brim, the contents will overflow when the pump is fitted.

After screwing on the pump, press it several times to prime it until the tube and the chamber fill and the product starts to come out. The dose per press is approximately 0.14 ml.

Fill the emulsion into the bottle only after it has cooled to room temperature. A warm emulsion contracts as it cools, and a vacuum forms in the bottle, which can affect the first dispensing. In addition, hot contents put stress on the plastic parts of the pump.

Good to know

Clear glass does not protect the contents from light. Emulsions with oils prone to oxidation, with vitamin C, retinol or a more significant share of essential oils are better stored away from direct sunlight, or you can choose amber or blue glass for them. A clear bottle, on the other hand, is suitable where the colour of the product or the layers of a two-phase product should be visible.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle with warm water, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely. The pump is harder to clean than the bottle itself. When changing the contents, pump clean water through it, then alcohol, and let it dry while empty. Residues of the old product in the valve can spoil a new filling, so for sensitive formulations it is worth using a new pump.

Glass does not transfer fragrance or colour and withstands temperature differences in normal use. However, it can crack when a hot bottle is cooled suddenly. The pump body is made of polypropylene, which withstands common cosmetic raw materials. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend checking whether the plastic parts soften or change colour over time.

A lotion pump is not a leak-proof closure. In a bag or a parcel, a filled bottle may release part of its contents when pressed. For transport, wrap the pump or close the bottle with a regular cap with the same neck.

The bottle is recycled as glass and the pump belongs with plastic, so separate them before disposal. Both parts withstand repeated use if they are cleaned after being emptied.

Closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations of a bottle with a closure can be found in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a clear glass bottle protect the contents from light?
No, clear glass lets light through and does not protect the contents from it. Emulsions with oxidation-sensitive oils, vitamin C or retinol are better filled into amber or blue glass, or a clear bottle can be kept in a cabinet away from the sun. For regular body lotions and hand creams that are used up within weeks, a clear bottle is sufficient.
Can a thick cream or balm be pumped through a lotion pump?
A thick cream with a high proportion of wax or butter will not pass through a lotion pump. The pump is designed for emulsions of medium and lower viscosity, that is, face and body lotions, fluids and cream serums. If you are not sure, test a small amount of the formulation in the set before filling the whole batch.
How much cream should I fill into a 100 ml bottle with a pump?
The bottle is filled up to the nominal volume of 100 ml, not to the neck. The remaining space up to the brim is a reserve for the tube and the pump body, which take up part of the volume once screwed in, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. If you fill to the brim, the product will overflow when the pump is fitted and the pump will get dirty.
Is the glass bottle and pump set suitable for food?
The set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the plastic lotion pump does not have one, so the set is intended for cosmetic products. For home-made oils or syrups, use a bottle with a closure that has a food contact certificate.
How do I clean a glass bottle with a pump before reusing it?
Wash the bottle with warm water and a cleaning product, rinse it, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry upside down. Pump clean water through the pump first, then alcohol, and let it dry while empty. If residues of the old emulsion remain in the valve, it is safer to use a new pump for sensitive formulations and keep the original one for less demanding contents.
Why does the lotion pump not dispense the contents right after I fill the bottle?
The pump starts to dispense the product only after the tube and the pump chamber fill up. After screwing it on, press the pump several times to prime it until the product reaches the outlet. With thicker emulsions this takes longer, and the first doses may be smaller than the usual dose.
