FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a hydrolat and a floral water?

They are used interchangeably in cosmetic practice; a hydrolat is the direct aqueous fraction from steam distillation of plants. The quality is influenced by the origin of the raw material, the method of distillation and storage.

How to incorporate hydrolates into a skin care routine?

They are applied after cleansing and before a serum or cream as a toner or mist. They can also form the aqueous phase in masks and emulsions.

Do hydrolates need preservation in finished products?

Yes, a preservative is required in aqueous formulations according to the recommended dosage and target pH. For pure hydrolates without preservation, refrigerated storage and rapid consumption is advisable.

How long does the hydrolate last after opening?

Most commonly 3-6 months depending on conditions and the presence of preservative. Store in a cool, dark place, tightly sealed.

Are the hydrolates also suitable for the scalp?

Yes, they are used as refreshing tonics and as the aqueous phase in no-rinse hair and scalp care formulas.
