Product description

Floral water, alcohol-free witch hazel in organic quality is a gentle aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by processing the leaves or bark of Virginian witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana. In cosmetics, witch hazel water is traditionally used as an astringent-acting aqueous component, especially in products for oily, combination and sensitive skin. The designation alcohol-free is important particularly in formulations where you want to avoid the drying sensation that may accompany witch hazel waters containing ethyl alcohol.
Organic witch hazel water is suitable for facial toners, mists, cleansing waters, aftershave preparations, products for the T-zone, hair tonics and light gels. In formulations it is used as the aqueous phase or part of it. It is suitable for combination, oily, impure, reddened, sensitive or porous skin, while for dry skin it is advisable to combine it with hydrating and soothing components.

Key benefits

  • Alcohol-free witch hazel water – suitable for toners and facial waters where ethyl alcohol is not desired.
  • Suitable for combination and oily skin – practical in formulations for the T-zone, shine and enlarged-looking pores.
  • Astringent character – suitable for products intended to support a feeling of tighter and fresher skin.
  • Suitable for aftershave preparations – without alcoholic stinging, provided the entire formulation is designed to be gentle.
  • Good choice for cleansing cosmetics – for facial waters, gels and micellar preparations.
  • Good combinability – suitable with panthenol, allantoin, aloe vera, niacinamide, betaine and zinc PCA.

Suitable for products such as

  • toners for combination and oily skin,
  • alcohol-free facial waters,
  • products for the T-zone with mattifying components,
  • aftershave and post-depilation preparations,
  • gentle cleansing waters and micellar preparations,
  • hair tonics for a fresh feeling of the scalp,

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: usually 1 – 100 % depending on product type and desired effect.
  • Soluble in: water.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, hydrolats, glycerin, propanediol, aloe vera and hydrogels.
  • Compatible with: facial toners, gels, oil-in-water emulsions, cleansing waters, hair tonics and aftershave preparations.
  • It is recommended to add during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • For oily skin: suitable with niacinamide, zinc PCA, green clay, betaine and light humectants.
  • For sensitive skin: combine with panthenol, allantoin, aloe vera and a lower proportion of potentially irritating aromatic components.
  • Preservation: when incorporating into an aqueous product, always assess the preservation system of the entire formulation.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use.
  • For sensitive skin, we recommend a tolerance test.
  • For dry skin, combine with hydrating components so that the final product does not act as overly tightening.
  • For the eye area, children’s cosmetics or very sensitive skin, assess the entire formulation.
  • Protect from contamination, light, heat and frost.
  • Store in a well-closed container, ideally in a cool, dark place.
  • In the finished product, verify pH, stability and preservation.

FAQ

What does alcohol-free witch hazel mean?

It means that the raw material is not based on ethyl alcohol like common alcoholic witch hazel waters. It is more suitable for gentler toners and facial waters where you do not want a drying alcoholic sensation.

Is witch hazel water suitable for enlarged-looking pores?

Yes, in cosmetics it is used in products for porous and oily skin. However, the final appearance of the skin depends on the entire formulation, regularity of use and combination with mattifying components.

Can it be used after shaving?

Yes, it is suitable for aftershave preparations without ethyl alcohol, especially in combination with panthenol, allantoin or aloe vera.

Is it suitable for dry skin?

It can be used in a lower proportion, but for dry skin it is advisable to combine it with glycerin, betaine, panthenol or a lipid phase so that the product does not act as tightening.

Can it be combined with niacinamide?

Yes, it can form part of the aqueous phase in products with niacinamide. The final pH must be suitable for both niacinamide and the preservative used.

Can it be used in a clay mask?

Yes, it is suitable for dispersing a clay mask just before use, especially for oily or combination skin. A mixture prepared in this way is not stored.
