Product description
An amber PET medicine bottle and a black lotion pump with a smoky overcap make up a ready-to-use set for dispensing serums, emulsions and light creams. The amber colour filters light, which helps protect light-sensitive contents, for example products made with vegetable oils, vitamins or antioxidants. PET is lightweight and unbreakable, which you will appreciate in travel packaging and in a bottle that is picked up every day in the bathroom. The pump releases a small, repeatable amount, so the set is best suited to products applied in a few drops or a thin layer: face serums, eye creams, light moisturising emulsions and concentrated products with active ingredients.
The volume of 50 ml is a typical size for a face serum or cream that lasts several weeks. The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food; the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic products.
What the set is suitable for
- Serums and concentrates – a small dose per press corresponds to the amount applied to the face or eye area.
- Light emulsions and moisturising creams – thinner O/W emulsions are drawn up through the dip tube without problems and applied without fingers touching the contents.
- Light-sensitive products – amber plastic limits the access of light, which speeds up the oxidation of oils and the breakdown of some active ingredients.
- Samples and travel packaging – the low weight and unbreakable nature of PET suit situations where glass is not appropriate.
How the set works
The bottle has a narrow neck with an 18 mm thread, onto which the 18/415 pump screws and seals. The dip tube of the pump reaches the bottom, so the contents can be dispensed even at a lower level. One press releases approximately 0.14 ml. This is an indicative value for thinner products; with thicker creams the dose may be smaller or the draw-up slower. The smoky overcap is dark-tinted and protects the pump head from dirt and from accidental pressing in a bag.
A pump with a dip tube works best with liquid and medium-thick products. For thick creams and butters, we recommend testing a single piece before a larger production run to check that the pump draws up the contents reliably and the dose is stable.
Nominal and total volume
The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The physical volume of the bottle up to the neck is larger. The difference is a reserve for the dip tube and the body of the pump, which take up part of the space once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The bottle is therefore filled up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, the contents overflow when the pump is screwed on and the dip tube cannot be inserted without soiling the neck.
Good to know
Before first filling, wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. It is enough to rinse the pump with pure alcohol through the dip tube and press it several times without contents, so that the internal mechanism dries as well.
PET is not suitable for hot filling. Emulsions and serums are filled only after they have cooled to room temperature, otherwise the wall of the bottle may deform. Do not expose the packaging to aggressive chemicals. For products with a high proportion of essential oils, solvents or alcohol, we recommend testing the behaviour of the bottle and the pump seal on a trial piece over several weeks.
A residue remains at the bottom of the bottle that the dip tube can no longer draw up. For small batches or expensive active ingredients, take this into account when calculating the yield of a single pack.
The set can be reused if it is thoroughly washed and disinfected after emptying. A pump with a dip tube is harder to clean than an ordinary cap, so a new one is recommended when the formulation changes. The bottle is made of PET and the pump of PP. Dispose of them separately in sorted waste, so unscrew the pump from the bottle.
Closures with the same neck type and other ready-made bottle and closure combinations can be found in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
