Product description

The amber PET medicine bottle with a volume of 50 ml and a black screw cap is ready-made packaging for smaller quantities of a liquid product: face and hair oils, oil serums, massage blends, herbal tinctures or samples from your own production. Amber plastic reduces light exposure, so contents sensitive to oxidation stay in their original state longer than in a clear bottle. Compared with glass, PET is light and does not break when dropped, which is useful when posting parcels, travelling and in a workshop where packaging is handled every day.

The bottle of European origin and the cap with an 18/410 neck finish are matched so that the cap fits onto the neck and seals the contents once tightened. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

Suitable uses

A volume of 50 ml corresponds to the usual size of a face oil or oil extract that is used up within a few weeks. It is equally good for trial batches. When you are testing a new blend of oils or a fragrance, you do not need to fill a large container, and if the test fails you lose only a small amount of raw material.

  • Oil products – face, body and massage oils, oil serum, cleansing oil. The oil can be poured into the palm from the narrow neck without spilling.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – amber plastic protects plant pigments from light. With a higher alcohol content, check after some time that the cap still seals.
  • Toners and water-based products – from a bottle without a sprayer they are applied to a cotton pad or into the palm.
  • Samples and travel packs – lightweight packaging that does not crack in a bag and adds no weight.

Cap and dispensing

A plain cap without an opening only closes the contents; the product is dispensed by pouring through the neck. The body of the cap is made of polypropylene and inside it has a sealing liner made of foam polyethylene (EPE). When tightened, it presses against the rim of the neck and prevents leakage and evaporation. If you need to dispense drop by drop or spray, closures with the same 18/410 neck type, as well as ready-made combinations of the bottle with another closure, can be found in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, check the tightness and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Nominal volume and filling

The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for under normal filling. The physical volume up to the neck is slightly larger. This difference provides a reserve for the cap or dropper and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The bottle is therefore filled up to the nominal volume and the space near the neck is left empty. An overfilled bottle overflows when closed and, when warmed, pushes the contents against the seal.

Let the contents cool to room temperature before filling. A hot oil phase or a freshly boiled extract can deform the wall of the PET bottle, and the cap will then not seat properly.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water shortens the shelf life of an oil product and increases the preservation requirements of a water-based product.
  • Reuse – PET withstands repeated washing. However, check the cap liner, as over time it may lose its elasticity and stop sealing. Replace a deformed or hardened liner by changing the cap for a new one with an 18/410 thread.
  • Food contact – the certificate for direct food contact applies to the amber 50 ml bottle on its own. The set with the black cap is intended for cosmetics as a whole.
  • Recycling – the bottle is PET, the cap is polypropylene. Separate them before disposal.

Do not expose PET to aggressive chemicals. Undiluted essential oils, fragrance compositions at high concentration and organic solvents can damage the plastic. Fill the medicine bottle preferably with finished diluted blends, and for atypical contents carry out a test on a single piece.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber plastic medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, the amber colour of the PET reduces light exposure and slows the oxidation of sensitive contents, for example vegetable oils with a higher proportion of unsaturated fatty acids or herbal extracts. The protection is not complete, so store the filled bottle out of direct sunlight. The difference compared with clear packaging shows mainly in products without added antioxidants.
Can I pour a tincture or an alcohol solution into the 50 ml plastic medicine bottle?
Yes, PET works with common alcohol extracts and toners containing alcohol, provided the cap is properly tightened. With longer storage of high-strength alcohol, check that the cap liner seals and that the contents are not decreasing through evaporation. With undiluted essential oils and organic solvents, first carry out a test on a single piece.
How much fits into a bottle with a nominal volume of 50 ml?
Under normal filling it holds 50 ml, which is the quantity the packaging is designed for. Above this level the bottle has a reserve up to the neck, which leaves room for the cap and for the expansion of the contents. If the bottle is filled to the brim, the contents leak out when the cap is screwed on and press against the seal when the temperature changes.
Which closure fits this bottle if I want to dispense drop by drop?
A dropper and other closures with the same neck type from the Handymade range fit the neck with the 18/410 thread. If you make your own combination, check the tightness and whether the dispensing suits the viscosity of the contents. A thicker oil flows more slowly through a dropper than a water-based solution, so try one piece before filling the whole batch.
Is the set of the bottle with the black cap suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. The certificate for direct food contact applies only to the amber 50 ml PET bottle on its own; the black cap does not have this declaration. For homemade oils or syrups, therefore, combine the bottle with a closure that has its own food-contact certificate.
