Product description

A clear 100 ml PET bottle together with a white lotion pump forms a ready-made packaging set for emulsions and gels, which are dispensed by pressing the pump, without unscrewing anything and without putting fingers into the contents. The bottle is lightweight and does not break when dropped, and the clear material lets you see the colour of the product and how much of it is left. It is most often filled with body lotions, face emulsions, light creams, serums and gel products, that is, anything that flows well enough to pass through the pump tube.

The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The bottle itself also has a certificate for direct food contact, whereas the pump does not, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

How the set dispenses

The pump screws directly onto the neck of the bottle. The tube reaches almost to the bottom, so the contents can be used up with only a small remainder. After filling, press the pump several times without product until the tube fills and the product starts to come out. One press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml; for a larger area, press several times.

The consistency of the product determines whether dispensing will be even. The pump is designed for creams and emulsions that start to move when pressed. Thick ointments, body butters and creams with a high proportion of waxes will not pass through the tube or will dispense unevenly. With very thin liquids, such as toners or aqueous solutions, the contents may drip from the pump nozzle, and a fine mist sprayer or dropper is more suitable.

Before filling a whole batch, fill one bottle and test the dispensing. The consistency and flow of an emulsion differ between formulations, and a single test saves repacking.

Filling and volume

The bottle is labelled with its nominal volume, that is, the quantity the packaging is designed for under normal filling. Physically, more fits in the bottle up to the neck. The difference between these values is a reserve for the tube and the body of the pump, which take up part of the space once screwed on, and for movement of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim, otherwise the product will be pushed out through the neck when the pump is fitted.

The bottle has an 18 mm neck. If the pump does not suit a particular product, you can find closures with the same neck finish and other ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. If you are making your own combination, we recommend verifying the tightness and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Clear PET and sensitive formulations

A clear bottle does not protect the contents from light. Products with vitamin C, retinol or oils prone to oxidation are better kept in amber glass, or at least in a box, and finished products in clear PET should be stored out of direct sunlight. For ordinary emulsions and gels with stable ingredients, transparency is an advantage. The customer can see what they are buying and will notice any colour change or phase separation in time.

PET is not filled hot. Let the emulsion cool to room temperature before filling, as the plastic may deform at higher temperatures. Undiluted essential oils and aggressive solvents do not belong in PET. In a finished formulation with a normal proportion of fragrance, this is not usually a problem. With a higher usage rate of essential oils or a higher alcohol content, we recommend a test to check that the packaging does not change shape or appearance after several weeks.

A bottle with a pump is not an airtight system. Each press draws air into the bottle, so products with a water phase need effective preservation, just as in a jar.

Good to know

  • Preparation before filling – rinse the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry upside down. Pump the disinfectant solution through the pump several times so that it also reaches the tube and mechanism, and leave these to dry as well. Fill only into completely dry packaging, as residual water would dilute the product and weaken the preservation.
  • Reuse – the bottle can be washed and used again. The inside of the tube and the pump mechanism are harder to clean, so when changing the product it is better to replace the pump with a new one.
  • Recycling – the bottle is made of PET and the pump of PP; separate them before disposal and sort both as plastic.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fill the 100 ml plastic pump bottle with a thick cream?
A thick cream or body butter does not belong in this set, as the pump is designed for emulsions that flow. The tube has a small diameter, and a solid mass either will not pass through it or will come out unevenly. For creams of medium thickness, we recommend testing the dispensing on one filled bottle beforehand; for very thick products, a jar is more suitable.
Is the clear PET bottle suitable for light-sensitive products?
No, clear PET does not filter light and does not protect the contents from it. Serums with vitamin C, retinol or oils that oxidise quickly are better filled into amber or blue glass, or the finished product should be packed in a box. Ordinary emulsions and gels with stable ingredients will keep in a clear bottle if they are not stored in direct sunlight.
Can I use the set with a pump for food, for example oil or syrup?
The set as a whole is not intended for food. Only the bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the lotion pump does not, and since the entire contents pass through it, the stricter of the two conditions applies to the combination. For food use, choose a bottle with a closure that also has a food-contact certificate.
Why is the bottle not filled to the brim when more fits in it?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 100 ml, because the remaining space up to the neck is needed by the tube and the body of the pump. If the bottle were filled to the brim, part of the product would be pushed out when the pump is screwed on. The reserve also compensates for changes in the volume of the contents as the temperature fluctuates.
Will a PET bottle withstand products containing alcohol or essential oils?
A PET bottle tolerates the usual proportion of alcohol or fragrance in a finished emulsion, but not undiluted essential oils and solvents. For formulations with a higher content of essential oils or ethanol, we recommend filling a test bottle and checking after several weeks whether the plastic has changed shape, turned cloudy or started to let the fragrance through.
