Product description

A blue glass medicine bottle with a capacity of 50 ml and a black aluminium cap is used for filling and storing liquid cosmetic preparations. Blue glass filters out part of the light, which in a clear bottle speeds up the oxidation of oils and changes in fragrance. The glass does not react with common cosmetic ingredients, does not absorb oil or fragrance compounds, and withstands formulations with a higher proportion of alcohol or essential oils.

The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The cap closes the bottle without a dispensing element; the contents are poured out or measured out. It is therefore suitable for face and body oils, serums, toners, tinctures and concentrated fragrance blends that are poured or decanted when used. It also works for samples and test batches, where 50 ml is enough to check a formulation.

What it is suitable for

  • Face and body oils – vegetable oils sensitive to oxidation, whose fragrance and colour are better preserved in darker glass.
  • Serums and toners – both water-based and alcohol-based formulations; the glass does not change its properties on contact with solvents or at a lower pH.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – homemade herbal tinctures intended for cosmetics.
  • Essential oil blends and perfume compositions – concentrated fragrance components belong in glass, which does not absorb them and can be reused after washing.
  • Samples and test batches – you can try out a formulation in the actual packaging before larger-scale production.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume is the quantity the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The total brimful volume, which you will find in the parameters, expresses the physical space of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the cap with its sealing liner and room for the contents to expand when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume, never to the brim, otherwise part of the contents is pushed onto the cap liner when closing.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and cap, rinse them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Water residues in an oil-based formulation make it cloudy and reduce its stability.

Cap and seal

The aluminium cap with an 18 mm thread has a foam polyethylene liner inside that sits on the bottle neck and seals it. Tighten it by hand. Excessive force compresses the liner and the seal deteriorates with repeated opening. Thin aluminium deforms easily, so do not open the cap with pliers or any other tool.

Closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle-plus-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, for example with a dropper for dispensing drop by drop, we recommend checking the tightness and behaviour of the closure with your specific formulation.

Good to know

Blue glass dims light but does not block it completely. Store the finished product away from direct sunlight, especially for oils with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids and for citrus essential oils.

Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes well. Let hot contents cool to at least lukewarm before filling, and do not place the bottle directly on cold stone or in a freezer.

After washing and disinfection, the bottle can be reused. When changing the contents from a fragrance composition to an unscented preparation, replace the cap, as the foam liner retains fragrance. For recycling, it is enough to unscrew the cap; the glass belongs in glass collection and the aluminium cap with metals.

The set is intended for cosmetic products; it is not approved for food.

Frequently asked questions

Does the blue 50 ml glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Partly. Blue glass lets through less light than clear glass and slows light-induced changes in the contents. Some light still passes through, so oils, serums with sensitive active ingredients and essential oils should be stored away from direct sunlight and strong shop lighting even in blue glass.
How much can actually be poured into a bottle with a nominal volume of 50 ml?
Fill it up to the nominal volume, that is, so that free space remains under the neck. The total brimful volume is larger and you will find it in the parameters, but it serves as a reserve for the cap, the sealing liner and the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. A bottle filled to the brim would overflow when closed.
Can the blue glass bottle with an aluminium cap be reused?
Yes, after washing and disinfecting with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, the glass can be reused without limit. The aluminium cap withstands several cycles, but its foam liner gradually loses elasticity and retains the fragrance of the previous contents. For products intended for sale or when changing the fragrance composition, we recommend a new cap.
Is the 50 ml glass bottle suitable for alcohol tinctures and essential oils?
Yes, glass does not react with alcohol or concentrated essential oils and does not absorb fragrance compounds. With highly volatile ingredients, check the tightness of the cap by leaving a filled bottle lying on its side for a few days. If the liner lets the fragrance through or becomes damp, tighten the cap by hand or replace it with a new one.
Can I fit a dropper or fine mist sprayer on the bottle instead of the cap?
Yes, the bottle has an 18 mm threaded neck, so closures with the same neck type, which is stated in the parameters, will fit it. Handymade offers droppers, fine mist sprayers and caps for this neck, as well as ready-made sets. For a dropper, check that the length of the glass tube matches the height of the bottle and that the insert seals well.
