Powder dyes are a group of finely ground inorganic and mineral pigments intended for tinting soaps, decorative cosmetics and body products. They are insoluble (they work as dispersed particles), have very good hiding power , colour fastness and heat resistance in cold soaping.
The range includes micas (micas) with a pearlescent effect, oxides with matt solid shades, ultramarines for blue/purple tones and two-colour pigments with changing shimmer. Particle size , dosage and proper pre-treatment/dispersion in oils or glycerin according to product type are important in formulation.
For aqueous gels, glycerin soaps or aqueous phase products, also consider liquid colorants. Use the sub-categories below for quick navigation between powder types.
Pearlescent to metallic highlights, excellent in decorative cosmetics, glycerin soaps and balms. They do not discolour the aqueous phase, creating an optical shimmer . See selection in MICA/MIKA.
Matte, high opacity pigments with heat stability suitable for cold process soaps, powders and lipsticks. Ideal for blending foundation shades. More in Oxides.
Intense blue, violet and pink tones. Suitable for powders, shadows and soaps; gentle pre-dispersion is recommended for even colouring. See Ultramarines.
Chameleon effect - changes shade according to the angle of light. Great for accents in decorative cosmetics and glycerin soaps. For an overview, see Two-tone pigments.
Common guideline dosages are 0.05-1.0% for make-up/powders and 0.1-2.0% for soaps (depending on the desired intensity). Gradual addition and visual inspection is recommended as the pigments are concentrated.
Disperse it in a small portion of oil (oil systems) or glycerine/propylene glycol (gel and glycerine bases) before use. Sifting and gradually mixing it into the base will also help.
Pigments are insoluble , so they typically do not stain foam or skin if properly dosed and evenly dispersed. If over-dosed, a sediment or intense color "stain" may form when wiped off.
Yes, oxides and ultramarines in particular have excellent temperature and alkaline stability. Mica is suitable for pearlescent effects and swirls; for CP, choose the dose conservatively and check the colour after setting.
For aqueous gel systems and glycerine soaps , they will allow fast and uniform coloration without powder dispersion. See liquid colorants.
