What the set is suitable for
This is a ready-made combination of a brown glass dropper bottle with a nominal volume of 30 ml and a black matte dropper with a glossy stripe. The bottle and the closure are matched to each other, so the set just needs to be filled and closed, without searching for and trying out a separate closure. The brown glass reduces the exposure of the contents to light and the dropper allows precise dosing drop by drop. The set is therefore a practical packaging for products that are used in small amounts and where a measured dose matters.
It is most often used for facial serums, oil serums, active concentrates, blends of essential oils in a carrier oil, beard and nail cuticle oils, or herbal tinctures. The 30 ml volume corresponds to the usual size of a serum that is used up over the course of a few weeks, so the contents do not have time to be „aired out“ for long through repeated opening.
Why brown glass and a dropper
- Protection from light – brown glass lets through significantly less light than clear glass, which helps slow down changes in light-sensitive substances, for example derivatives of vitamin C, retinoids, unsaturated vegetable oils or essential oils. However, it does not replace antioxidants or preservation; the stability of the formulation depends above all on its composition.
- Inert material – glass does not react with oils, essential oils or alcohol, does not take on odours and does not discolour over time. Contents that would eventually cloud or soften a plastic bottle will not change the glass in any way.
- Contact-free dosing – the dropper has a glass tube and a silicone bulb. The dose is drawn by squeezing the bulb and dripped onto the palm or directly onto the skin. The contents therefore do not touch the fingers and less dirt is introduced into the bottle than with an open neck.
- Appearance – the matte black head with a glossy stripe looks understated on the brown glass and pairs well with a simple label for your own brand.
Filling and volume
Two volumes are given for the bottle and it is important not to confuse them. The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is intended for under normal filling, and it is this one the packaging is declared and labelled for. The total volume to the brim is the physical volume all the way up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the glass tube of the dropper, which pushes part of the contents upward after closing, and for the expansion of the contents during temperature changes. Both values are given in the parameters.
Fill the bottle up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The dropper tube takes up part of the space when closing and overfilled contents would leak onto the thread, where they stick and reduce the seal.
What is good to know
- Before the first filling – wash the bottle with warm water and detergent, rinse thoroughly, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely upside down. For the dropper, rinse the tube and squeeze the bulb several times to push out any remaining water.
- Suitability for cosmetics – the set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration of conformity is provided with the product. The certification for direct contact with food applies separately to the glass bottle; the dropper does not have it, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.
- Water-based contents need preservation – the dropper limits contact with the fingers but does not replace a preservative. Water-based serums and toners in this packaging must be preserved just as in any other packaging. Anhydrous oil-based contents do not need a preservative, but an antioxidant will help them.
- Essential oils and the bulb – the glass tube has no problem with concentrated essential oils. The silicone bulb is durable, but with undiluted blends of essential oils or strong solvents we recommend checking whether it softens over time. The contents should not reach all the way into the bulb; after dosing, push the residue back into the bottle.
- Reuse – after thorough washing and disinfection the bottle can be used again. For the dropper, check that the bulb still springs back and the tube is not cracked. Rinsing with ethanol will remove oil residue from the tube.
- Stick the label onto dry and degreased glass, otherwise it peels off on contact with oil.
- A different closure – if you want to use the bottle with a different type of closure, closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations can be found in the Handymade offer. For your own combination we recommend verifying the seal and dosing with the specific formulation.
- Recycling – the bottle belongs with glass; the dropper is a combination of glass, plastic and silicone, so separate it from the bottle before disposal.
Do not pour a hot oil phase into the bottle directly from heating. Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Fit the dropper only once the contents have cooled to room temperature, otherwise as it cools a vacuum forms in the bulb and the contents are sucked up into the tube.
