Product description

The glass bottle type B with an oil pump dispenser is a ready-made set for oil preparations in a small volume of 10 ml. Oil is dispensed in small, consistently equal doses without unscrewing and without finger contact with the contents. Brown glass filters light that accelerates yellowing of vegetable oils and loss of fragrance. The set consists of a glass bottle, a black pump dispenser with an 18/410 neck and a transparent protective cap. Suitable for facial oils and oil serums, cuticle oils, hair oils for ends, essential oil blends, and samples or travel-sized oil products.

The set as a whole is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the glass bottle individually holds a certificate for direct food contact. The dispenser and cap do not have one, so the set is intended for cosmetic use only.

Why a bottle with a pump dispenser instead of a dropper

  • Precise small doses – one press dispenses approximately 0.18 ml, which is the amount for one application to the face or nails. The dose is always the same, oil does not spill and is not wasted unnecessarily.
  • Hygienic dispensing – the contents come out through the dispenser and nothing from the skin returns to the bottle. With a dropper, the glass tube is returned to the contents after each use.
  • Light protection – brown glass is suitable for oils prone to oxidation (linseed, rosehip, cranberry seed and others with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids) as well as for blends with essential oils.
  • Glass with no odour memory – glass does not absorb fragrances or dyes, and after thorough washing the bottle can be reused for a different fragrance.
  • Transparent cap – protects the dispenser head from dust and accidental pressing in a bag, and does not cover the colour of the packaging or the label.

How to use the set

Fill the bottle to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the quantity for which the packaging is designed for normal filling. The total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them provides a reserve for the dip tube and the body of the dispenser, which take up space once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. If the bottle is filled to the brim, oil will overflow through the neck when screwing on the dispenser and contaminate the thread.

The dispenser dip tube is supplied longer than the height of the bottle. Before first use, shorten it with a sharp knife using an angled cut so that it ends just above the bottom without touching it. The dispenser will then pump out almost all the contents and the tube will not bend.

After screwing on, the dispenser needs to be primed with several presses until the tube and chamber are filled with oil and a full dose begins to come out. The dispenser is designed for liquid oils and oil serums. Very thick oils, shea butter dissolved in oil, or blends with a thickener are harder to pump and may clog the dispenser. Very thin aqueous solutions may dispense unevenly. We recommend testing the behaviour of a specific filling on one unit before larger-scale filling.

Before first filling, wash the bottle, rinse it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely. Residual water in an oil product promotes microbial growth and spoilage. Before use, flush the dispenser with clean oil or alcohol and leave to dry; water in the tube would end up in the contents.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial oils and oil serums – the small volume corresponds to typical consumption over several weeks, and dark glass protects sensitive oils.
  • Nail and cuticle oils – one dose is enough for both hands, without dripping on the table.
  • Hair oils for ends – the dispenser prevents overdosing, which weighs hair down.
  • Fragrant oil blends – a carrier oil with essential oils as an alternative to a roll-on packaging.
  • Samples and travel sizes – the customer tries the product in the same way as they will use it in the full-size packaging.

Good to know

The dispenser is not airless. With each dose, air enters the bottle to replace the pumped-out oil. For oils with a short shelf life, it therefore helps to add an antioxidant (for example Tocopherol) and fill smaller quantities more frequently rather than storing a filled bottle for months.

The tube and body of the dispenser are made of plastic and are in permanent contact with the contents. For blends with a high proportion of essential oils, citrus essences or solvents, we recommend checking whether the dispenser softens, becomes cloudy or changes the scent of the contents after a few weeks. The transparent cap is made of polystyrene and does not come into contact with the contents. Regular essential oils do not harm it, but it may become cloudy if directly splashed.

The set with a dispenser is not intended for food use. If you want to use the brown bottle for home-made oils or tinctures for internal use, combine it with a closure that has its own food-contact certificate.

Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Let hot oil cool to at least lukewarm temperature after melting wax or butter before filling, and do not place a cold bottle on a hot surface.

Closures with an 18/410 neck and other ready-made combinations of this bottle with other closures can be found in the Handymade range. For a custom combination, we recommend testing the seal and the behaviour of the closure with the specific formulation.

After use, the glass bottle is sorted as glass. The dispenser and cap are plastic and must be unscrewed before placing in the glass bin. Once washed and disinfected, both the bottle and the dispenser can be reused, provided the dispenser pumps evenly and the tube is not cloudy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the glass bottle with an oil pump dispenser suitable for water-based tonics or hydrolats?
This is not its primary purpose. The dispenser is designed for liquid oils and oil serums. With low-viscosity aqueous solutions it may dispense unevenly or the contents may leak down the dispenser head. For hydrolats and tonics, the same brown bottle with a sprayer or dropper with an 18/410 neck is more suitable.
How much oil fits in the 10 ml bottle with a dispenser?
It is filled to approximately 10 ml, which is the nominal volume of the bottle. The total volume to the brim is higher, but the difference provides a reserve for the tube and the body of the dispenser and for the expansion of the oil with temperature changes. If the bottle is filled to the neck, oil will overflow when screwing on the dispenser and contaminate the thread.
Why does the oil dispenser not pump anything after screwing on?
The dispenser needs several presses before the first dose to fill the tube and the chamber with oil. If it still does not pump after ten presses, check that the tube reaches below the oil level and is not bent against the bottom, and that the contents are not too thick to pump.
Does brown glass protect the oil from oxidation?
Brown glass significantly reduces light exposure, which accelerates oil oxidation, but does not prevent it entirely. The dispenser is not airless and with each press, air enters the bottle. For sensitive oils, an antioxidant in the formulation and a shorter time between filling and use therefore help.
Can I fill the bottle with a dispenser with an essential oil blend?
Yes, the set is suitable for cosmetic oil blends, including those with essential oils at standard usage rates. The tube and body of the dispenser are made of plastic. At a high concentration of citrus essences or in blends with a solvent, we recommend testing on a single unit and checking after a few weeks whether the plastic has become cloudy or is affecting the scent of the contents.
Can the glass bottle with a dispenser be washed and reused?
Yes, both the glass and the dispenser can be reused. Wash the bottle with warm water and dish soap, rinse with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry. Pump alcohol through the dispenser and dry it thoroughly so that no water remains in the tube. Replace a dispenser that pumps unevenly or has a cloudy tube with a new one.
