Product description

This set of an amber PET bottle with a volume of 30 ml and a plastic treatment pump is used to store and accurately dispense oil-based preparations. Amber plastic reduces the light that is harmful to facial and hair oils. The pump delivers a small measured dose with each press, so the oil does not drip wastefully and the bottle stays clean on the outside. The clear overcap covers the pump during storage and when carrying the bottle in a bag.

This bottle shape is called a medicine bottle, which describes only its narrow cylindrical shape with straight walls. The set as a whole is declared for contact with cosmetic products.

Suitable uses

  • Facial oils and oil serums – one dose corresponds to the amount for a single application to the face, without overflowing.
  • Beard oils and oils for hair ends – dispensed into the palm with one hand, with no unscrewing and no dropper.
  • Oil blends with essential oils at a lower concentration – the dark packaging protects sensitive ingredients from light.
  • Cuticle oil, body oils in travel size – 30 ml lasts for several weeks and the plastic does not break if dropped.

The 30 ml volume is also suitable for test batches. You can try a new oil serum formula in a smaller quantity and see how it behaves in normal use.

How the set works

The pump screws directly onto the neck of the bottle and, when pressed, draws the oil up through the dip tube into the outlet. One dose is approximately 0.18 ml, that is, a few drops. Thicker oils and blends with a higher proportion of butters pass through the pump with more difficulty, so check that your formula flows freely through the pump at room temperature. Do not use the treatment pump for water-based or alcohol-based preparations – the set is designed for oil-like consistencies.

After filling the bottle and screwing on the pump, prime it by pressing it several times until the dip tube fills with oil and the first dose comes out in the full amount.

When filling, take into account the difference between the nominal and the total volume. The nominal volume is the quantity the bottle is designed for under normal filling. The brimful volume is larger, because it includes the space up to the neck. This reserve leaves room for the dip tube of the pump and for the contents to expand when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume, never to the brim, otherwise the oil will overflow through the neck when the pump is fitted.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. No residual water should get into the oil preparation.

PET is lightweight and resistant to drops, but it is not suitable for long-term storage of undiluted essential oils or preparations with a higher proportion of solvents. Such contents can damage the plastic over time. Protect the set from heat and let hot oil phases cool before filling.

The amber bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food. The pump and the clear overcap do not have one, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. For food use, combine the bottle with a closure that has a separate food-contact certificate.

Food use applies only to the bottle without the pump. Fill the set with the pump exclusively with cosmetic oils and serums.

The bottle can also be used with other closures with the same neck type from the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, check that the closure seals properly and how it behaves with your specific formulation. Once empty, the bottle can be washed and refilled. Rinse the pump with warm water and a little cleaning product, and press it several times to clean the dip tube and the valve. Before disposal, unscrew the pump; the bottle goes in plastic recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber PET bottle protect oils from light?
Yes, amber PET lets through less light than clear plastic, and so slows down the oxidation of oils, which light speeds up. It does not, however, replace proper storage. Keep the bottle away from direct sunlight and heat sources, so that facial and hair oils retain their scent and effect for as long as possible.
How much oil does the treatment pump dispense with one press?
One full press of the treatment pump dispenses approximately 0.18 ml, which corresponds to a few drops. For a facial serum, one to two doses are usually enough; for hair ends or a beard, more, depending on length. The exact amount depends on the thickness of the oil and on whether the dip tube is completely filled.
Can the treatment pump be used for a thick oil or a butter blend?
The treatment pump is intended for liquid oils and oil serums. Thicker blends pass through with more difficulty or clog it. Test formulas with a higher proportion of solid butters at room temperature in a single bottle. If the dose comes out unevenly or weakly, the blend is too thick for this type of pump.
Is the bottle and pump set suitable for edible oils?
The set as a whole is not approved for contact with food, because the pump and the overcap are declared only as suitable for cosmetics. The amber PET bottle on its own does have a food-contact certificate. For homemade oils or herbal infusions, therefore, combine the bottle with a different closure that has a food-contact certificate.
Why should the bottle not be filled to the brim?
The bottle is filled up to the nominal volume of 30 ml, not to the brim, to leave room for the dip tube of the pump and for the oil to expand when the temperature changes. If it is filled up to the neck, the oil overflows when the pump is screwed on and the outside of the bottle gets dirty. The brimful volume is therefore always larger than the nominal volume.
Can the PET bottle be used for undiluted essential oils?
No, a PET bottle is not recommended for storing undiluted essential oils. Concentrated essential oils and solvents can damage the plastic over time. It is suitable for finished oil blends in which the essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil at usual cosmetic concentrations. Check compatibility on a single test bottle.
