Product description
A small glass bottle for oils, serums and tinctures that need protection from light. The amber square pharmaceutical bottle with a volume of 45 ml is supplied together with an aluminium screw cap with an 18 mm thread. Both the bottle and the cap are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. Amber glass dampens light, so it suits contents that light gradually damages: facial oils, oil serums, tinctures or blends of essential oils. Glass also does not react with alcohol or essential oils, so it can be filled with contents that would, over time, attack a plastic container.
The 45 ml volume corresponds to a small pack size. It is enough for trying out a new recipe, for a travel version of a product, or for an amount of oil that the customer uses up before it starts to spoil. The square shape stands firmly and the bottles can be stored tightly next to each other.
What the set is suitable for
- Facial and body oils – amber glass slows down the oxidation of light-sensitive oils, and the narrower neck allows the contents to be poured in small amounts.
- Oil serums and concentrates – the small volume suits dispensing in drops, as a serum is used up slowly.
- Tinctures and alcohol extracts – alcohol does not damage glass, and the threaded cap keeps the contents closed between uses.
- Essential oil blends and perfume concentrates – concentrated fragrance components belong in glass, which does not absorb the scent or turn cloudy.
- Samples and trial batches – when testing stability or sending out samples, 45 ml is a sufficient amount for assessing a product.
The bottle and cap as a whole
The cap is made of aluminium and has an inner liner made of EPE (polyethylene foam), which sits on the neck of the bottle and seals the contents. It has no dispensing element; the contents are poured or taken out of the bottle with a separate dropper when working in the workshop. This kind of closure is suitable wherever the contents are taken out all at once or where the bottle should be as simple as possible, for example for samples and for storing concentrates.
If the finished product is to be dispensed in drops, the cap can be replaced with a dropper or another closure with the same neck type. You will find suitable closures and ready-made bottle and closure combinations in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
Nominal and total volume
The nominal volume of 45 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total brimful volume, stated in the parameters, is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the cap or another closure and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim, otherwise the contents will be pushed out when closing or will remain in contact with the cap liner.
With oils and alcohol-based fills, also leave free space above the surface because the contents expand in warmth and the bottle is tilted during transport. Filling to the nominal volume provides this reserve.
Good to know
Before first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Residues of water in the bottle would get into an anhydrous oil or serum and reduce its stability. Do not pour a hot fill into cold glass, because thermal shock can cause the bottle to crack. Let the oil phase cool first to a temperature close to room temperature.
The bottle can be reused; after washing and disinfection it can be filled again. The liner in the cap may take on the scent of the previous contents, so when changing the fill, especially after essential oils, we recommend replacing the cap with a new one.
Tighten the aluminium cap by hand only. If it is tightened with force, the aluminium deforms and the cap then does not seal evenly.
The set is intended for cosmetic products; it is not declared for contact with food. At the end of its life, the glass belongs in glass recycling and the aluminium cap in metal recycling, separately.
