Product description

The glass bottle with an aluminium cap is sold as a ready-made set: a black glossy 50 ml pharmaceutical bottle and a silver screw cap with an 18/410 neck finish. Black glass does not let light through, so the contents are protected from light for the whole period of use. It is suitable for facial and hair oils, oil serums, tinctures and toners that are poured or applied straight from the bottle.

Suitable uses

A bottle with a plain cap and without a pump is suited to contents that are poured into the palm or onto a cotton pad. For facial and hair oils, a closed black bottle is particularly suitable because light speeds up the oxidation of vegetable oils, so even more expensive oils keep well in it without unnecessary exposure. It can equally be filled with alcohol-based tinctures, facial toners, make-up removing oils or massage blends with essential oils, where precise dispensing is not needed.

The aluminium cap has an EPE liner inside, which sits on the neck of the bottle and seals the contents. For alcohol-based contents and oils with essential oils, we recommend testing the seal on one piece before a larger production run, as the behaviour of the liner depends on the specific formulation.

Volume and filling

On the page you will find two volume figures, and each means something different. The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for under normal filling, and for this set it is 50 ml. The brimful capacity is the physical volume of the glass up to the neck and is stated in the parameters. The difference between them forms a reserve for the closure, a possible dropper or sprayer, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. Fill up to the nominal volume. If you fill to the brim, the contents are pushed out when the cap is screwed on and the cap liner stays soiled.

You cannot see the liquid level through black glass. When filling, we therefore recommend measuring by volume, for example with a measuring cup or a syringe, as estimating by eye does not work here.

Closure and combinations

The set is supplied with a silver aluminium cap, but the 18/410 neck finish also accepts other closures with the same neck finish. You will find droppers, sprayers and ready-made bottle + closure combinations in the Handymade range. With your own combination, check the seal and the dispensing with your specific formulation, especially for contents with low viscosity.

Good to know

  • Preparation before the first filling – wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in an oil-based or anhydrous product reduces its stability.
  • Glass and heat – do not pour a hot phase into a cold bottle. Glass tolerates sudden changes in temperature poorly and may crack. Leave the contents to cool to at least lukewarm, or warm the bottle beforehand.
  • Tightening the cap – aluminium deforms when dropped or overtightened, and the liner then does not sit evenly. Tighten the cap by hand without force.
  • Glossy surface – fingerprints and greasy marks remain on black glossy glass. If you sell your products, it is worth wiping the bottles before packing.
  • Reuse – glass can be washed and used again. When changing the contents, for example from an oil to a toner, wash the cap liner as well, or replace the cap with a new one.
  • Recycling – glass belongs with glass and the aluminium cap with metals, so separate them before disposal.

The set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the aluminium cap does not, so the set is intended for cosmetics. For homemade oils or syrups, choose a glass bottle sold separately and a closure with a food-contact certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, black glossy glass is opaque and does not let light through to the contents. For oils, oil serums or tinctures this is an advantage, because light speeds up oxidation and the loss of active ingredients. With opaque glass, however, you cannot see the liquid level, and the remaining amount can only be estimated by weight or by pouring.
How much actually fits into a 50 ml bottle?
The bottle is designed for 50 ml of contents, which is its nominal volume. Physically more fits into it, and the brimful capacity is stated in the parameters. The difference serves as a reserve for the closure and the expansion of the contents. If you fill to the brim, the contents are pushed out after screwing on the cap and the cap liner stays greasy.
Is the set with an aluminium cap suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the aluminium cap does not. The whole set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics and is used for oils, serums, toners and tinctures intended for skin and hair.
Can the black 50 ml glass bottle be filled with a tincture or toner containing alcohol?
Yes, glass is resistant to both alcohol and water and is commonly used for alcohol-based tinctures and toners. The seal with alcohol-based contents depends on the EPE cap liner. For this reason, fill the first piece, lay it on its side and check after a few days whether the contents leak or evaporate.
Which closure fits a bottle with an 18/410 neck finish?
Any closure with an 18/410 neck finish fits the bottle, that is, the same neck finish as on the supplied aluminium cap. From the Handymade range, the cap can be replaced with a dropper or a sprayer with this neck finish. When changing the closure, check the seal and the dispensing with the specific contents, because thin oils and alcohol-based solutions behave differently from thicker serums.
How do I clean the bottle and cap before reuse?
Wash the bottle with warm water and detergent, rinse it, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely with the neck facing down. Wash and dry the aluminium cap separately so that no water remains in the liner. If the liner smells of the previous contents or is greasy, replace the cap with a new one.
