Product description
Amber plastic medicine bottle with a volume of 115 ml, supplied together with a black lotion pump and a smoky overcap. The bottle and closure have a matching thread, so once filled you only need to screw the pump on and the product is ready for use or sale. The pump draws the contents up from the bottle through a tube and dispenses the same small dose with every press, which makes it easier to apply creams, body lotions and thicker serums without the customer touching the rest of the contents.
The bottle is made of PET, so it is lightweight and does not break if dropped. The amber colour of the plastic limits the amount of light reaching the contents, which you will appreciate especially with emulsions containing vegetable oils, vitamins or essential oils that are sensitive to light. The set as a whole is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products.
What the set is suitable for
- Creams and body lotions – medium-thickness emulsions that can be pumped comfortably and that the customer uses repeatedly during the day.
- Hand creams and face creams – one dose corresponds to the amount for a single application; for a larger area, press several times.
- Thicker serums and fluids – the 115 ml volume makes sense for products that are used up within a few weeks, for example body serums or night fluids.
- Hair and beard creams – leave-in conditioners and styling creams that are not too firm.
Very firm balms, butters and thick gels with a high gum content are difficult or impossible to dispense with a pump. Very thin, watery products such as toners are better suited to a bottle with a fine mist sprayer or a dropper.
Before filling a larger batch, fill a single bottle and check that your emulsion pumps smoothly even after standing for a day. The viscosity of the finished cream changes as it cools and matures, and the pump may struggle with a thicker texture.
How the pump works
The lotion pump screws onto the neck of the bottle and the tube reaches into the contents. After the first few presses the pump primes itself and then dispenses approximately 0.14 ml with each press, which is a small dose for the face, hands or spot application. The smoky overcap fitted on the pump head protects the outlet from dust and from accidental pressing during handling.
Nominal volume and filling
The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The physical volume of the bottle up to the neck is larger. The difference serves as a reserve for the tube and the body of the pump, which push part of the contents upwards once screwed on, and for any expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle is therefore filled up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, the contents are pushed out through the neck when the pump is screwed on and soil the thread, which impairs the seal.
Fill the cream once it has cooled to room temperature. PET is not suitable for hot filling; the heat may deform the bottle and the neck will then not seal.
Preparation before filling and reuse
The bottle and the pump are supplied new, but before filling with cosmetics for the first time we recommend rinsing the bottle, disinfecting it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leaving it to dry completely with the neck facing down. For the pump, it is enough to pump a little alcohol through it and then clean water, so that no residues remain in the tube and in the head.
Once the contents have been used up, the set can be used again. Pump warm water with a cleaning product through the pump thoroughly to remove residues of the old cream, which would otherwise clog the valve. If you are planning to change the fragrance or the type of product, bear in mind that the plastic may retain a trace of the original scent.
Good to know
Only the bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact. The lotion pump does not have this suitability declared, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics and should not be used for food.
PET tolerates common cosmetic emulsions, oils and water-based products. The packaging should not be exposed to aggressive chemicals, so for formulations with a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or organic solvents we recommend checking suitability on a single filled bottle over several weeks.
The pump does not seal like a screw cap. If you carry the bottle lying down in a bag, a small amount of the contents may escape from the outlet; the smoky overcap only protects against dirt and accidental pressing. When posting finished products, wrap the bottle in a bag or secure the pump.
The bottle is made of PET and the pump of PP. For recycling, unscrew the pump from the bottle and put both parts in the plastics recycling.
You can find ready-made combinations of the bottle with other closures for the same neck type in the Handymade range. If you combine the bottle with a closure of your own choice, we recommend checking the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
