Product description
The amber plastic medicine bottle with a lotion pump is a ready-made packaging solution for creams, face lotions and lighter emulsions that you want to dispense with a press, without unscrewing a cap. The bottle has a nominal volume of 115 ml, a medicine bottle shape and an amber tint that filters light and helps protect formulations containing vegetable oils, vitamins or essential oils. The white lotion pump screws onto the neck and releases a small measured dose with each press, so there is no need to pour out the contents or scoop them with your fingers.
The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The bottle on its own is certified for direct food contact as well, but the pump is not, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.
Key features
- Amber PET – limits the amount of light reaching the contents and slows the changes in fragrance and colour that light causes. The plastic is light and unbreakable, so the packaging is also suitable for travel and for the bathroom.
- Lotion pump – the dip tube draws the contents from the bottom of the bottle and each press delivers the same dose. Your hands do not come into contact with the contents, which reduces the risk of introducing impurities into the product.
- Volume 115 ml – enough for body lotion, day cream or cleansing milk for several weeks of use, or for a smaller batch of samples for customers.
- Medicine bottle shape – a slim cylindrical bottle with a stable base takes up little space on a shelf.
Suitable products
A pump with a dip tube works best with contents that can be drawn up: face and body lotions, fluid creams, light to medium-thick emulsions, cleansing milks, liquid foundation bases, gel serums or liquid soap with a thicker consistency. Thick butters, balms and solid creams cannot be drawn up by the pump, so a jar is more suitable for them.
The pump also works with oil serums and pure oils, but each press delivers only a small dose. For oils that are applied in larger amounts, a bottle with a dropper or a pouring cap is usually more convenient.
Nominal and brimful volume
The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical capacity up to the neck and is always slightly larger. The difference is a reserve for the dip tube and the pump body, which take up part of the space once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume, not to the brim, otherwise part of the contents will be pushed out through the neck when you screw on the pump.
Let emulsions that are filled hot cool down before you screw on the pump. A warm emulsion is thinner and takes up more space, and as it cools in a closed bottle a vacuum forms, which can pull in the PET walls or suck in the dip tube.
Good to know
Before the first filling, rinse the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely. It is enough to rinse the pump with clean water, or with an alcohol solution, and let it drain with the tube pointing down. Residual water in the tube would dilute the first dose of the product.
After filling and screwing on the pump, press it several times without dispensing until the tube fills and the pump starts to release the contents. This priming is normal with every new filling.
The pump is not an airtight system. Air enters the bottle with every press, so formulations with a water phase need effective preservation just as they do in a jar. A small residue will also always remain at the bottom that the tube cannot draw up, so take this into account when calculating quantities for small batches.
For products with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend testing how the packaging behaves with your specific recipe and checking whether the plastic softens or turns cloudy. Do not expose the bottle to aggressive chemicals or high temperatures, as PET deforms with heat.
Tighten the pump by hand, without tools. Tightening it too much can damage the thread on the neck of the PET bottle, and the set will then leak.
After washing, the set can be used again, but the pump is a mechanical part and may lose its springiness after prolonged use. Before refilling, check that the pump returns to its original position and seals properly. You can find closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations in the Handymade range; if you make your own combination, we recommend testing the seal and the dispensing with your specific formulation.
The bottle is made of PET and the pump of PP. Separate them before disposal and sort them as plastic.
