Product description

The 115 ml amber plastic medicine bottle with a screw-on pump is ready-made packaging for liquid and lightly creamy cosmetic products that are dispensed in small doses without unscrewing the cap. The amber PET reduces the amount of light reaching the contents, so it also suits formulations with vegetable oils, vitamins or extracts that are sensitive to light. The plastic is light and does not break when dropped, which is useful for packaging that stands by the sink or travels in a bag.

The pump has a white head with a glossy gold ring and a clear tube that reaches the bottom of the bottle. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The bottle itself is also approved for direct contact with food, but the pump is not, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

What the set is suitable for

  • Serums and fluids – the small dose per press suits products applied only a few drops at a time, and the amber plastic adds to the protection of the active ingredients from light.
  • Face lotions and light body lotions – thinner emulsions pass through the tube without effort.
  • Liquid hand creams by the sink – the contents do not come into contact with fingers when dispensed, which helps keep the emulsion clean throughout use.
  • Massage and hair oils – thin oil blends dispense easily. Pure essential oils require caution, as described below.

Filling and dispensing

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. Physically, a little more fits up to the neck, but this difference is a reserve for the pump tube and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled up to the nominal volume, not to the brim, otherwise some of the contents will leak out when the pump is screwed on.

One press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml. This is a small dose, which suits serums, fluids and face oils. With thicker products, the dose becomes smaller.

The first few presses after filling do not dispense anything until the tube draws up the contents. Press the pump several times over the sink and only then start using the packaging or pack it for sale.

The thickness of the formulation determines how the contents will be dispensed. Lotions, gels, serums and oils flow smoothly. Thick creams are pushed through the tube slowly or not at all, and the pump may jam.

The pump is designed for liquid to medium-thick products. We recommend testing the behaviour of a thicker cream or a gel with a higher proportion of thickener on one piece before filling an entire batch.

Good to know

  • Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Pump the disinfectant and then clean water through the tube so that no residues remain inside.
  • Fill with cooled contents. PET is not intended for hot filling, so let the emulsion cool to room temperature before filling.
  • Pure essential oils, strong solvents and aggressive chemicals do not belong in this packaging; you will find details in the questions below.
  • Reuse is possible. Wash the bottle with warm water and washing-up liquid, pump warm water with washing-up liquid through the pump several times and then clean water. Before refilling, disinfect both parts and let them dry. If you change the fragrance or the formulation, bear in mind that traces of the previous contents may remain in the tube.
  • Other closures with the same neck type and other ready-made bottle and closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend testing the seal and the dispensing with your specific formulation.
  • Recycling – the bottle is made of PET, while the pump combines plastic with aluminium, so separate it from the bottle before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does an amber plastic medicine bottle with a pump protect the contents from light?
Yes, the amber colour of the PET reduces the passage of light and slows down light damage to sensitive ingredients. It does not provide complete darkness, so for formulations with a high proportion of unsaturated oils or vitamins, also store the packaging away from direct sunlight. The protection from light is better than with a clear bottle, but worse than with opaque packaging.
How much product fits into a 115 ml medicine bottle with a pump?
With normal filling, the calculation is based on 115 ml, which is the nominal volume of the packaging. The rest of the space up to the neck serves as a reserve for the pump tube and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If you fill the bottle to the brim, the contents will be pushed out when the pump is screwed on and the packaging may get dirty.
Can the pump on the 115 ml medicine bottle be used for thick creams?
No, the pump is intended for liquid to medium-thick products. Thick creams and butters pass through the tube only with difficulty, the dose becomes smaller and the mechanism may jam. For thick formulations, a jar or a bottle with a wider neck is more suitable; for lotions, serums, gels and oils, this pump is sufficient.
Is the plastic medicine bottle with a pump suitable for oils and essential oils?
For vegetable and massage oils, yes; thin oils dispense without problems. Pure essential oils and concentrated blends do not belong in PET packaging, as they can damage the plastic and affect the seal of the pump. Essential oils in normal cosmetic dilution in a carrier oil or an emulsion are fine; at higher concentrations, we recommend testing how the packaging behaves over time.
Is the 115 ml bottle and pump set approved for food contact?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the bottle on its own is approved for direct contact with food; the pump has no such declaration. For homemade oils or syrups, therefore, use the bottle with a different food-grade closure, and keep the set with the pump for lotions, serums, gels and other cosmetic products.
