Product description

The blue glass medicine bottle with a white lotion pump is packaging for small quantities of creams, eye and face serums, gels and body milks. With each press the pump dispenses a measured amount, the contents do not touch your fingers during use, and less air gets into the bottle than when a cap is unscrewed.

The nominal volume of 15 ml suits a travel pack, a customer sample or an eye cream of which only a little is used at a time. The set is supplied as a ready-made pair of bottle and pump, so there is nothing to buy separately or to match by thread.

Suitable uses

  • Eye creams and serums – one press dispenses the amount normally applied around the eyes.
  • Face creams and emulsions – a medium to thicker consistency that would not flow easily from a dropper and would have to be scooped out of a jar with your fingers.
  • Gels and hydrating serums – the pump dispenses them evenly and without contact with the hand.
  • Samples and testers – 15 ml is enough to try out a new formulation with a customer or for gift sets.

Volume and filling

The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck and you can find it in the parameters. The difference is the allowance for the dip tube and the pump body, which take up part of the space once fitted, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle is therefore filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, part of the cream is pushed out around the thread when closing and the pump may not seat tightly.

The dip tube of the pump is longer than the bottle. Before fitting it, trim it so that it ends just above the bottom without touching it. A tube that is too long bends and the pump draws in air, while one that is too short leaves part of the contents at the bottom.

Before the first filling, the bottle and the pump are washed, disinfected with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and left to dry completely. Before the pump is fitted, it is pressed several times empty so that any moisture leaves the tube.

Good to know

Consistency of the contents. The pump is designed for creams, milks and gels. Very thick balms or products with solid particles, such as scrubs, may jam in the tube. For thin liquids such as toners or hydrosols, a fine mist sprayer is more suitable. A lotion pump will dispense them, but the dose may splash. The approximate dose per press is 0.14 ml; with your own formulation, check the actual amount.

Pump material. The pump body is made of polypropylene. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils, solvents or alcohol, check before a larger production run that the pump does not soften and that it still seals properly. A declaration of suitability for contact with cosmetic products is available for the pump; you can find it with the product.

Glass and heat. Do not fill the bottle with a hot emulsion. Let the contents cool to room temperature, otherwise there is a risk of thermal shock to the glass and of water condensing under the pump.

Reuse. The bottle can be washed and disinfected without limit. The pump can only be partly disassembled, and residues of cream in the tube and in the pump body are harder to remove. When making products for sale, the pump is used only once. For your own use, it is enough to rinse it with warm water with a small amount of surfactant and then pump clean water through it.

Fit the pump only onto a filled bottle and make the first presses over a sink. Until the tube fills, the pump dispenses air and then an incomplete dose.

Recycling. The glass part goes into glass recycling; the pump is made of polypropylene marked with the code PP 5 and is sorted with plastics. Separate the two parts before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

How much cream fits into a 15 ml glass bottle with a lotion pump?
The bottle with the pump is filled to the nominal volume of 15 ml, not to the brim. Above this level there must be room for the dip tube and the pump body and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The total brimful volume is given in the parameters, but it only serves as information on the physical size of the bottle, not as the filling volume.
Can the lotion pump also be used for oil or serum?
Yes, the lotion pump also dispenses facial oils and serums of normal thickness. With very thin oils or liquids as thin as water, the dose may splash, so test the output before a larger production run. For products with a high proportion of essential oils, also check how the plastic parts of the pump behave.
Is the 15 ml glass bottle with a lotion pump suitable for food?
No, this set is not approved for contact with food and is used for cosmetics. The declaration of suitability for contact with cosmetic products is available for the lotion pump and you can find it with the product. No separate declaration is available for the bottle, so suitability for cosmetics is not stated for the whole set.
How do you clean a glass bottle with a lotion pump before reuse?
Wash the bottle with warm water and a cleaning product, disinfect it with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and leave it to dry completely. Rinse the pump with warm water with a surfactant, pump clean water through it and let it air dry. Residues of thick cream in the tube are hard to remove, so when making products for sale, the pump is used only once.
Why does the lotion pump not dispense cream after it is fitted?
The tube and the pump body are empty after fitting, and the first presses push out only air. Press the pump repeatedly over a sink until the tube fills. If no cream comes out even then, the tube is probably bent against the bottom of the bottle, or the contents are too thick or contain particles that have lodged in the tube.
