Product description

This 30 ml glass bottle with a lotion pump combines dark glass with a pump, so cream or serum is dispensed without opening the bottle and without fingers touching the contents. The black glossy glass protects the contents from light, which is useful for emulsions with vegetable oils, vitamins or other active ingredients that lose effectiveness in light. The 30 ml volume matches a typical pack of face cream, serum, eye cream or light fluid.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. The bottle on its own also has a certificate for direct food contact, but the pump does not, so the assembly as a whole is intended for cosmetic products.

What it is suitable for

  • Face creams and emulsions – the pump dispenses roughly the same amount each time, which makes it easier to measure a daily dose and saves the contents.
  • Serums and fluids – thinner textures pass through the pump easily, and the packaging keeps them in the dark at the same time.
  • Eye creams and décolletage creams – only a small amount is applied, so a small dose is an advantage here.
  • Products with sensitive ingredients – the closed system limits the access of air and fingers to the remaining contents with each use.

How the pump works

On first use, press the pump several times so that the cream is drawn up the tube and fills the mechanism. After that, each press releases approximately 0.12 ml of product. With thicker creams, it is worth checking that the pump draws up the contents smoothly. Very stiff balms and ointments are not designed for a pump and are better kept in a jar.

Before filling, run a test with a small sample of the finished formulation. You will find out whether the texture passes through the pump smoothly and whether it flows back into the tube after pressing.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total brimful volume stated in the parameters is slightly larger and represents the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference serves as a reserve for the tube and the pump mechanism and for possible expansion of the contents. The bottle is therefore filled only up to the nominal volume. If it is filled to the brim, the cream overflows when the pump is fitted and contaminates the seal.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Any remaining moisture inside would dilute the first layer of cream.

Do not fill the glass with a hot emulsion. Let the cream cool to room temperature, and only then transfer it into the packaging. A sudden temperature change is not good for glass, and a warm emulsion also produces condensation under the closure.

The pump is made of polypropylene. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, check how the pump behaves with your specific formulation before you fill the whole batch.

After thorough washing and disinfection, the bottle can be reused. The pump is harder to clean, because cream residues remain in the tube and mechanism. When you change the formulation, it is safer to replace the pump.

Closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations can be found in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness and dispensing with your specific formulation.

For recycling, glass goes with glass and the PP pump goes with plastics, so separate them before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, black glass does not let light through, so the contents stay in the dark throughout the whole period of use. It is therefore suitable for creams and serums with vegetable oils, vitamins or extracts that oxidise or lose colour in light. However, the overall stability of the product is also affected by the formulation, preservation and storage temperature.
Can the glass bottle with a lotion pump be used for a thick cream?
It depends on the consistency. Ordinary face creams and emulsions are drawn up and dispensed by the pump without problems, while very thick creams may be drawn up slowly or incompletely. Solid balms and ointments without a water phase are not suitable for a pump. For thicker formulations, we recommend a test with a small sample before filling the whole batch.
How much cream does the pump dispense per press?
One press releases approximately 0.12 ml of product. With 30 ml of contents, this corresponds to approximately 250 presses. The actual amount depends on the thickness of the cream and on whether the pump is fully primed, so on first use press the pump several times to prime it.
How many ml should be filled into a bottle with a nominal volume of 30 ml?
Fill it up to the nominal volume, that is 30 ml. The total brimful volume is larger, but this space is a reserve for the pump tube and the expansion of the contents. An overfilled bottle overflows when the pump is fitted, and the cream gets onto the thread, where it can impair the seal.
Is the glass bottle and pump set also suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic products. The glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact, but the plastic lotion pump does not carry such a declaration. For food use, therefore, choose a bottle with a closure that is declared suitable for food contact.
How do you prepare the glass bottle with a pump before the first filling?
Wash both parts in warm water with a cleaning product, rinse them, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Flush the pump with the alcohol by pressing it several times, so that it reaches the tube and mechanism as well. Residual water or alcohol would dilute the first dose of cream.
