Product description

The amber plastic medicine bottle with a volume of 50 ml and a screw-on lotion pump is a ready-made set for face emulsions, body lotions, lighter creams and serums that you want to dispense by pressing, without unscrewing the cap. The amber colour of the bottle filters light, so contents with vegetable oils, vitamins or other light-sensitive ingredients are not exposed to direct light. PET is lightweight and does not break when dropped, so the set suits the bathroom, a handbag and travel.

The pump releases a small, repeatable amount with each press, and the contents do not touch your fingers during use. For emulsions and creams this is also an advantage in terms of hygiene, because there is no need to scoop the product out of a jar.

What the set is suitable for

  • Lighter face and eye creams – the pump handles emulsions that flow freely or spread easily. A small dose suits face products.
  • Serums and fluids – both water-based and emulsion serums are dispensed cleanly and precisely, without dripping down the neck.
  • Travel-size body lotions and hand lotions – the 50 ml volume is suitable as a sample, a travel pack or a first trial batch.
  • Liquid masks and hair treatments – everything from liquid to medium-thick consistency without coarse particles.

Thick ointment-type creams, balms and products containing wax cannot be dispensed reliably with a pump; a jar is more suitable for them. Products with scrub particles, which could clog the valve, are equally unsuitable.

Filling and handling the pump

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the dip tube would dilute the first doses and, with preserved emulsions, needlessly burden the preservative system.

Fill to the nominal volume, that is to 50 ml, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total volume up to the neck is physically larger, and the difference between the two is a reserve for the dip tube, the body of the pump and the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If the bottle is overfilled, the contents will overflow through the neck when you screw on the pump.

After filling and screwing on the pump, prime it by pressing it several times until the tube and valve fill up and the emulsion starts to come out. If the tube reaches the bottom and bends, cut it at an angle so that its end almost touches the bottom. Otherwise a residue that cannot be pumped out will remain at the bottom of the bottle.

One press releases approximately 0.12 ml, which corresponds to a small dose for the face or eye area. For body products, expect to use several presses per application.

Good to know

Only the bottle has a separate food-contact certificate. The pump does not have one, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. We do not recommend it for homemade oils, syrups or infusions. Both parts are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

The PET bottle withstands common emulsions, water-based serums and vegetable oils. If the contents have a high proportion of concentrated essential oils, alcohol or other solvents, test how the packaging behaves on a small sample first, as the plastic could soften or turn cloudy. The packaging is not intended for hot filling, so let the emulsion cool to room temperature before pouring.

The set can be reused. Rinse the pump by pumping warm water through it and then air, wash the bottle and disinfect both parts again before the next filling. When you change the recipe, thorough cleaning is necessary, because residues of the old emulsion in the tube would contaminate the new batch.

You will find closures with the same neck finish as stated in the bottle parameters, and other ready-made combinations, in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

The bottle is made of PET and the pump of polypropylene. After use, unscrew both parts and sort them as plastic.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 50 ml amber plastic medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, the amber colour of the PET filters light and reduces the amount that reaches the contents. For emulsions with vegetable oils, vitamins or plant extracts, this is an advantage over clear packaging. However, plastic does not guarantee complete protection from light, so do not leave the filled packaging in direct sunlight or on a windowsill.
Can the 18 mm lotion pump dispense a thick cream?
A thick ointment-type cream or balm cannot be dispensed reliably by the pump. It is designed for emulsions, serums and lotions that flow or spread easily. With thicker creams, the dose gets smaller, the valve is strained and the emulsion may stay in the tube. If the formulation turns out thick, adjusting the recipe or switching to a jar will help.
How much cream fits into the 50 ml bottle + pump set?
You fill 50 ml, that is to the nominal volume. Above this mark the bottle has a reserve up to the neck, which is taken up by the dip tube and the body of the pump. If it is overfilled, the contents will overflow through the neck when the pump is screwed on. Leave some space and pour in the emulsion once it has cooled, so that it does not expand in the packaging.
Is the set with the lotion pump also suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the amber PET bottle has a separate certificate for direct food contact; the lotion pump does not. We therefore do not recommend this combination for homemade oils, syrups or herbal infusions. Both parts are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products.
How do I clean the lotion pump before reuse?
Unscrew the pump and pump warm water through it several times, then air, until no emulsion residues come out of the nozzle. Wash the bottle in the usual way. Before filling again, disinfect both parts with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry, so that no water or residues of the old recipe get into the new batch.
