Product description

A ready-made set of a green glass medicine bottle, 100 ml and a black plastic cap with an 18/410 neck finish. The bottle has a narrow neck and straight walls, and it suits liquid preparations that are poured or measured out: facial and hair oils, serums, toners, herbal tinctures, blends of essential oils in a carrier oil, and massage oils. Green glass filters out some of the light reaching the contents, while still letting you see the level, so it is clear how much product is left.

The cap closes and seals the contents; it does not dispense. The set is therefore suited to preparations that are poured from the bottle, decanted into smaller containers, or taken out with a separate dropper. Both the bottle and the cap are declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The set is not declared suitable for contact with food, so please use it for cosmetic purposes only.

Key features of the set

  • Green glass – filters out some of the light and so slows down changes in the contents that light causes. For very light-sensitive ingredients, we still recommend storing the bottle in the dark, as only an opaque container gives full protection from light.
  • Glass does not absorb fragrances or dyes – after washing, the bottle can be used again with no odour left from the previous contents. It is also suitable for essential oils and alcohol-based tinctures, which put plastic packaging under strain during longer contact.
  • PP cap with a foam liner – the foamed polyethylene liner sits against the neck and seals the contents even when the cap is simply closed by hand in the usual way. When storing blends with a high proportion of essential oils for a longer time, we recommend checking the condition of the liner regularly.
  • 18/410 neck finish – a common cosmetic thread. The cap can later be replaced with another closure of the same neck type, for example when moving from production to dispensing for customers.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed to hold under normal filling. The brimful capacity, that is the physical volume up to the neck, is slightly larger, and you will find it in the parameters. The difference between the two values is a reserve for the cap, a dropper or a sprayer if used, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Therefore, fill the bottle to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, part of the contents is pushed onto the thread when closing and the cap does not seal.

Pour oils and tinctures through a funnel with a narrow tip. The neck is narrow, and when pouring straight from a larger container the contents easily reach the outer thread, where over time they collect dust and make the cap harder to open.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap in warm water with washing-up liquid, rinse them thoroughly and disinfect the inside with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Let both parts dry completely before filling. Residual water in an oil-based preparation shortens its stability, and in a tincture it changes the concentration.

Glass does not tolerate a sudden change in temperature well. Let a hot oil extract or a freshly strained macerated oil cool first, at least to a temperature at which the container can be held in the hand, and only then pour it into the bottle. Likewise, do not pour cold contents into a bottle that has just been taken out of hot water.

With repeated use, the cap wears out sooner than the glass. If it no longer closes without resistance or the liner has changed shape, replace it with a new one with an 18/410 neck finish. You will find closures for this neck and other ready-made bottle and closure combinations in the Handymade range. If you combine parts yourself, we recommend checking the seal with your specific formulation.

The glass bottle is not intended for freezing, or for heating the contents in a water bath with the cap closed. When heated, the contents expand and the pressure rises inside a closed container.

Frequently asked questions

Does a green glass bottle protect the contents from light as well as an amber one?
Green glass filters out some of the light, but it protects less than amber glass. For ordinary facial oils, toners or tinctures kept on a shelf or in a bathroom cabinet, this is sufficient. For preparations with a high proportion of unsaturated oils or with light-sensitive ingredients, we recommend keeping them away from direct daylight even in a green bottle.
How much does a 100 ml glass bottle really hold?
The bottle is designed for 100 ml of contents, and the physical volume up to the neck is slightly larger, which you will find in the parameters. The difference serves as a reserve for the cap, a dropper or a sprayer, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If you fill to the nominal volume, there is space left above the level, the closure seals, and the contents do not leak onto the thread.
Is a green glass bottle with a cap suitable for essential oils and tinctures?
Yes, glass is suitable for both essential oils and alcohol-based tinctures, because it does not react with the contents and does not absorb fragrances. Pure essential oils are dispensed more slowly and more precisely through the narrow neck. With undiluted essential oils, we recommend checking the cap liner regularly, as plastic parts are more sensitive to them than glass.
Can the cap on an 18/410 bottle be replaced with a dropper or a sprayer?
Yes, the bottle has the common cosmetic 18/410 neck finish, so other closures with the same neck type also fit. When replacing the cap, we recommend checking that the new closure sits on the neck without play and that it seals with your specific contents, especially with thin oils and alcohol-based solutions. You will find closures for this neck in the Handymade range.
How do I prepare the glass bottle and the cap before the first filling?
Wash both parts in warm water with washing-up liquid, rinse them with clean water and disinfect the inside with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Then let the bottle and the cap dry completely, with the neck facing down, on a clean cloth. Moisture in the container would encourage spoilage in an oil and change the concentration in a tincture, so fill only once the container is dry.
Can hot oil or an extract be poured into the glass bottle?
No, let hot contents cool first. Glass does not tolerate a sudden change in temperature well, and if a hot extract is poured into a cold bottle, the bottle may crack. Pour only when the container with its contents can be held comfortably in your bare hand. Close the cap only after the contents have cooled completely, so that no vacuum forms in the container.
