Product description

Glass vial with black cap, 50 ml is a complete set for contents that lose stability in light – facial and hair oils, oil serums, essential oil blends, tinctures, and oil macerates. Brown glass limits light exposure and the plain black plastic screw cap closes the bottle simply without a dispensing element, so the contents are poured or measured separately. The set is therefore best suited for storage, transport, and sale of smaller quantities of finished product and as a whole is intended for cosmetic products.

Why choose a brown vial with a cap

  • Light protection – brown glass absorbs a large portion of the light that accelerates the oxidation of plant oils, fading of coloured extracts, and changes in the scent of essential oils. The contents thus retain their original properties longer, even when stored on a shelf.
  • Glass does not react with contents – it does not absorb scent and is resistant to oils, alcohol, and essential oils. This makes it suitable for concentrated blends where plastic might soften or become cloudy.
  • Simple, reliable closure – the polypropylene cap has a foam sealing insert that seats on the neck and prevents leakage when tipped over or during transport. Without a pump or dropper, the set is low-profile, compact, and easy to pack.
  • Vial shape – the straight body provides sufficient surface area for a label and the bottle is easy to grip even when pouring.
  • Reusable – after washing and disinfecting, the bottle can be used again, which you will appreciate in your own production where containers cycle between batches.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for during normal filling. Total volume to the brim is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck and is always slightly larger. The difference between them is the headspace – room for the cap's sealing insert, for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes, and for comfortable closing without forcing contents onto the thread. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Both values are listed in the product parameters.

When filling, leave an air gap in the neck. If you fill the vial to the brim, the contents will get onto the thread when screwing on the cap, the cap will not seal properly, and the label may get soiled.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial and hair oils and oil serums – light protection makes the most sense here, as unsaturated plant oils oxidise the fastest.
  • Essential oil blends and fragrance compositions – for a diffuser, bath, or further dilution, where a larger quantity is measured at once.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – neither alcohol nor plant dyes harm glass, and the brown colour slows fading.
  • Oil macerates – calendula, St. John's wort, or arnica macerate, which are further processed into ointments and balms.
  • Samples and travel sizes – 50 ml is a volume that lasts several weeks of use and is also easy to ship.

The glass bottle itself has a food contact certificate. The cap in this set does not have such a certificate, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic use.

If you want to use the vial for home oils, syrups, or herbal extracts, choose a closure with a food contact certificate. We do not recommend this set with the black cap for food use.

Good to know

  • Before first filling wash and rinse both the bottle and the cap, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow to dry completely. Residual water in an oil-based product promotes microbial growth.
  • Glass and heat – do not pour hot mixtures into the vial and do not expose it to sudden temperature changes. Allow the contents to cool to room temperature before filling and closing.
  • Tightening the cap – hand-tightening is sufficient. Excessive force compresses the foam insert and tightness will worsen rather than improve with repeated opening.
  • Concentrated essential oils and alcohol – glass handles these without issue. For prolonged contact with the sealing insert, we recommend checking the tightness and condition of the insert after a few weeks with a specific formulation.
  • Label – the straight body of the vial is suitable for a self-adhesive label. For oil-based products, apply the label to a dry, degreased surface, otherwise it will peel off.
  • Other closures – if you need a dropper, pump, or spray, choose a closure with the same neck type as listed in the parameters. Ready-made combinations and individual closures can be found in the Handymade range.
  • Recycling – unscrew the cap and dispose of it with plastics, the bottle with glass.

Frequently asked questions

Does the brown glass of the vial protect the contents from light?
Yes, brown glass absorbs a substantial portion of both visible and UV light, which slows the oxidation of oils and fading of plant dyes. It does not, however, replace proper storage – keep the vial with oil or essential oils in a cool place away from direct sunlight. For light-sensitive contents, brown glass is more suitable than clear.
How much can be poured into the 50 ml glass vial?
The vial is designed to be filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml. Physically more fits in, as the total volume to the brim is larger, but this difference serves as headspace for the cap's sealing insert and expansion of the contents. If you fill it to the neck, the contents will reach the thread and the cap will stop sealing.
Is the glass vial with black cap suitable for food?
The set as a whole is not declared for food contact. The glass bottle itself does have a food contact certificate, but the black plastic cap does not, so the set is intended for cosmetic products. If you want to use the vial for edible oils or syrups, choose a closure with a food-grade certificate.
Can the glass vial be reused and how to clean it?
Yes, glass can be reused without loss of properties. Wash the bottle with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and leave to dry neck down. Wash the cap separately and check the foam insert – if it is compressed or saturated with the scent of the previous contents, replace it with a new one.
Is the vial with a plain cap suitable for essential oils and tinctures?
Yes, brown glass is a suitable material for essential oils and alcohol-based tinctures, as it does not react with the contents and protects them from light. A plain cap without a dispensing element is suitable where the contents are measured or poured – for example into a diffuser, bath, or when further diluting a larger quantity at once.
Can I use a dropper or spray instead of the cap on the 50 ml vial?
Yes, the vial can be closed with any closure that has the same neck type as listed in the parameters – a dropper, pump, or mechanical spray. When changing the closure, always verify the seal and dispensing with the specific contents, especially with thick oils. Ready-made combinations with other closures are available in the Handymade range as separate products.
