Product description

This glass bottle with a black cap, with a volume of 50 ml, is a complete set for cosmetics that should be kept away from daylight. Glossy black glass is opaque, so it is suitable for face and body oils, serums, essential oil blends, tinctures and concentrates that lose their fragrance or effect with prolonged exposure to light. The 50 ml volume corresponds to the usual size of a face serum, a nail oil or a sample for customers.

The cap with an 18/410 neck finish is a plain screw cap with no dispensing mechanism. The contents are poured straight from the bottle, without a dropper or pump. This suits thicker oils, preparations that are measured into a bowl, and any use where you want the bottle as storage or travel packaging. The medicine bottle shape sits well in the hand and stands securely on a shelf.

What the set is suitable for

  • Face and hair oils – unrefined oils and oil serums that are sensitive to light stay in opaque glass longer without any change in fragrance.
  • Essential oil blends – glass does not react with oils, and the black wall protects sensitive components. You can later decant the contents into a bottle with a dropper.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – glass withstands alcohol, and the dark packaging protects the extract from light.
  • Samples and test batches – at 50 ml you can check the stability of a recipe in the same type of packaging that you will use for a larger pack.
  • Gift and product range packaging – uniform black glass with a black cap creates a coherent range without any further decoration.

Volume and filling

The nominal volume of 50 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The brimful capacity, given in the parameters, is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between the two values is a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume. Contents poured up to the brim will overflow when the cap is screwed on and will press on the seal when warmed.

With oils and alcohol-based blends, leave free space below the neck. The air gap under the cap protects against leaking around the thread when the temperature changes.

Cap and seal

The black polypropylene cap has an inner EPE liner, which sits on the neck when tightened and seals the contents. With oils and aqueous solutions, tightening by hand is enough. The cap can be opened and closed repeatedly; with frequent use, check the liner from time to time.

Closures with the same 18/410 neck type and other ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend testing the seal, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation, especially with essential oils.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely with the neck facing down. Treat the cap in the same way, without removing the liner. The glass can be reused: simply wash out any oil residue with warm water and a cleaning product, and disinfect again. When changing to contents with a different fragrance, it is advisable to replace the cap with a new one.

Glass does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature. Before filling, let the hot oil phase cool to at least a temperature at which the bottle can be held in the hand, and never pour hot contents into a bottle chilled in the fridge. In black glass you cannot see the level or any cloudiness, so note down the filling date and the batch.

Only the glass bottle on its own has the certificate for direct contact with food. The cap does not have it, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. For home-made oils or syrups, you would have to combine the bottle with a closure approved for food.

The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products; you will find the declaration of conformity with the product. At the end of its life, the bottle goes into glass recycling and the cap into plastics.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, glossy black glass is opaque and lets no light through to the contents. It is therefore suitable for oils, serums and essential oils, which oxidise faster or lose their fragrance in light. The drawback is that you cannot see the level, cloudiness or any change of colour. Check the condition of the contents by opening the bottle, and note down the filling date.
Can I pour a full 50 ml into the 50 ml bottle?
Yes, 50 ml is the nominal volume the bottle is designed for. Above this level, a reserve remains below the neck up to the brimful capacity given in the parameters. The reserve is needed for the cap and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes, so do not fill the bottle above the nominal volume.
Is the set with a black cap suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the glass bottle on its own has the certificate for direct contact with food; the plastic 18/410 cap does not have it. If you want to use the bottle for home-made oils or herbal extracts, combine it with a closure whose suitability for food is stated in the parameters.
Is the black glass bottle suitable for essential oils and tinctures?
Yes, glass does not react with essential oils or alcohol, and the opaque wall protects the contents from light. With concentrated essential oils, we recommend testing how the plastic liner of the cap behaves with your formulation and, for long-term storage of pure essences, replacing the cap after some time.
Can the bottle with its cap be washed and used again?
Yes, the glass can be washed repeatedly with warm water and a cleaning product, disinfected with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and refilled once dry. The cap is cleaned in the same way, without removing the liner. When changing to a different fragrance or recipe, we recommend a new cap.
What closure suits the 18/410 neck?
Any closure with an 18/410 neck finish fits the bottle, i.e. a cap, dropper, sprayer or pump with this neck type. Ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, check the seal and dispensing with your specific formulation; thick oils, for example, flow more slowly through a dropper than aqueous toners.
