Product description

A brown glass bottle (vial) with a pump dispenser protects the contents from light and dispenses them in small, consistent doses. The set with a nominal volume of 100 ml is suited for light-sensitive cosmetics applied in small amounts: serums, oils and light emulsions. The contents are neither poured out nor scooped with fingers during use, so they remain protected from unnecessary contact with air and hands.

The white-and-gold glossy pump dispenser is screwed onto the bottle via a thread. The bottle can therefore be opened, refilled or cleaned at any time.

What products is the set suited for

  • Serums and oil serums – a small dose per pump press makes it easy to apply concentrated products economically.
  • Facial and body oils – the brown glass limits light exposure for oils prone to oxidation.
  • Light emulsions and milks – the pump reliably draws up liquid to medium-viscosity textures.
  • Hair oils and fluids – dispensing by pump press helps gauge the amount so hair does not end up weighed down.

The pump is not suitable for thick creams, butters, high-viscosity gels or products with solid particles (scrubs, clay suspensions). The mechanism will not draw them up or will clog.

How to use the pump dispenser

One press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml of product. The resulting amount can therefore be easily adjusted by the number of presses, and just as easily stated in the finished product's directions for use. Before first use, the pump must be pressed several times without product until the tube and mechanism are primed.

If the dip tube is too long for a particular fill and bends against the bottom, simply cut it at an angle. The angled cut also prevents the tube from suctioning against the bottom of the bottle.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is intended for under normal filling conditions, i.e. 100 ml. The total volume to the brim is the physical capacity up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference provides headroom for the pump mechanism and dip tube, which displace some of the contents when screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle is therefore filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Exact values are listed in the product specifications.

What to know before filling

  • Preparation before first filling – the bottle should be washed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry completely. The pump is cleaned by pumping a small amount of alcohol through it and left to dry disassembled on a clean surface.
  • Glass and heat – glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Fill the contents when lukewarm or cooled, never hot.
  • Contact with cosmetics – both the bottle and the pump are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The glass bottle on its own holds a food-contact certificate; the complete set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.
  • Labelling – the dimensions needed for label design are listed in the product parameters. The label is applied to dry, degreased glass.
  • Recycling – the bottle goes into glass waste. The pump is made of plastic and aluminium and should therefore be separated from the bottle before sorting.

The plastic parts of the pump come into contact with the contents. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or solvents, we recommend checking in advance that the pump still seals and dispenses evenly after several weeks.

Closures with the same neck type (specified in the product parameters) and further ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available from Handymade. With a custom combination, we recommend testing the seal, dispensing and packaging behaviour with the specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the brown glass bottle with a pump dispenser protect the contents from light?
Yes, brown glass limits light transmission, which accelerates the oxidation of oils and the degradation of sensitive active ingredients. The protection is not complete, however. Products containing easily oxidising oils or vitamins should still be supplemented with an antioxidant and stored away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
How thick a product can the pump on the 100 ml glass bottle handle?
The pump is designed for liquid to medium-viscosity products — oils, serums, fluids and light emulsions. It will not draw up thick creams, butters or stiff gels, and products with solid particles may clog it. At borderline viscosities, it is worth testing the dispensing on a small sample before filling the entire batch.
Can the 100 ml glass bottle with a pump dispenser be filled to the brim?
No, the bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 100 ml, not to the brim. The pump with its dip tube displaces some of the contents when screwed on, and the contents also expand with temperature changes. Overfilling can therefore cause leakage through the thread when closing, contaminating the neck and the label.
Can the glass bottle with a pump dispenser be reused?
The glass bottle can be reused if it is thoroughly washed, disinfected with alcohol and left to dry. The pump is harder to clean because product residue remains in the tube and mechanism. For the same product, flushing with warm water followed by alcohol is sufficient. When changing the contents, it is safer to use a new pump.
Is the brown glass bottle with a pump dispenser suitable for food?
The set as a whole is not intended for food; it is intended for cosmetic products. Only the glass bottle alone holds a food-contact certificate; the pump does not. For oils, syrups or extracts intended for consumption, the bottle must therefore be combined with a closure that has confirmed food-contact suitability.
