Product description

The amber PET bottle with pump, 50 ml, is designed for creams, lotions and serums that are dispensed in small doses without unscrewing the closure. The amber plastic filters light, so contents with vegetable oils, vitamins or other light-sensitive ingredients are better protected than in a clear bottle. PET is lightweight and does not break when dropped, which is useful in the bathroom and when travelling.

The set consists of a medicine bottle and a white and gold glossy pump fitted on the neck. The contents are dispensed by pressing the pump, without opening the packaging. The whole set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics.

What it is used for

  • Creams and emulsions – face and hand creams of thinner and medium consistency that the pump can push through the dip tube.
  • Body and face lotions – thinner emulsions where an exact small dose is appreciated.
  • Serums and fluids – water-based and emulsion serums, gel serums and light fluids applied in a few drops.
  • Cleansing gels and liquid soaps – a small pack for travel or samples, dispensed with a single press.
  • Samples and test batches – a volume of 50 ml is enough to try out a formula with customers or for a smaller batch.

Dispensing and filling

One press of the pump dispenses approximately 0.14 ml of the contents. With a serum or eye cream this corresponds to a single dose, while for body lotion you press several times. A 50 ml fill therefore gives many doses, which pays off with concentrated products.

The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total volume to the brim is larger, because the bottle has a reserve above the nominal level. This is needed for the dip tube and the body of the pump, which take up part of the space once fitted, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill the bottle up to the nominal volume, not to the neck. An overfilled bottle overflows when the pump is fitted and the contents get onto the thread.

Before fitting the pump, check that the dip tube reaches the bottom of the bottle. If it is longer, cut it straight so that the end touches the bottom. The pump will then draw up even the last millilitres of the contents.

Pour emulsions and gels into the bottle only after they have cooled to room temperature. PET is not designed for hot filling; it softens with heat and may deform. After filling, press the pump several times without product until the dip tube fills and the contents start to come out evenly.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Moisture inside would get into the product and put unnecessary strain on the preservative system. Rinse the dip tube of the pump separately, as residual water in it is hard to check.

The bottle withstands repeated use. After it is emptied, wash it with warm water and a cleaning product, disinfect it if needed, and let it dry. The pump is cleaned by pumping clean water through it and then air, so that no product remains in the mechanism. If you change the formula, we recommend a new pump, as residues of the previous contents are hard to remove from it.

PET tolerates water-based and emulsion products and common vegetable oils well. For formulas with a higher proportion of essential oils, alcohol or solvents, we recommend checking in advance whether the plastic softens, turns cloudy or absorbs the scent. It is also worth testing how the pump behaves with your specific viscosity. Very thin solutions may squirt out when pressed, while thick creams, on the other hand, will not be drawn up the dip tube.

The amber PET bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact. The pump does not have one, so the set as a whole is considered packaging intended for cosmetics, not for home-made oils or syrups.

If you need a bottle for food use, choose it separately and close it with a closure that has its own food-contact certificate. With this pump, the set is intended only for cosmetic products.

The PET bottle belongs in plastic recycling. Besides plastic, the pump contains an aluminium part, so separate it from the bottle before disposal. You can find other closures with the same neck type and further ready-made packaging plus closure combinations in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the seal, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formula.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber PET bottle, 50 ml, protect the contents from light?
Yes, the amber colour of the plastic reduces light transmission and its effect on the contents. It is therefore suitable for emulsions and serums with vegetable oils, vitamins or other ingredients that lose stability faster in light. The packaging does not provide complete darkness, so do not expose the bottle to direct sunlight during longer storage.
How much cream does the pump on the 50 ml bottle dispense with one press?
One full press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml of the contents. With a serum or eye cream this corresponds to a single dose, while with body lotion you press several times. The actual amount depends on the viscosity of the contents and on whether the dip tube is completely filled, so press the pump several times without product before first use.
Is the plastic medicine bottle with pump suitable for food?
No, the set with the pump is not approved for food contact. The amber PET bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the pump does not. The whole set is declared suitable for cosmetic products. For oils or syrups, choose the bottle separately with a closure that has a food-contact certificate.
Can the bottle with pump be filled with warm cream?
No, PET softens with heat, and a hot emulsion may deform the bottle or change the shape of the thread, so the pump will no longer seal. Let the cream or lotion cool to room temperature first and only then fill the bottle, ideally with a syringe or funnel so that the contents do not get onto the neck thread.
Why is the 50 ml bottle not filled to the brim?
It is filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml, because the space above it is a reserve for the pump and for the expansion of the contents. Once fitted, the dip tube and the lower part of the pump take up part of the volume, and the contents expand slightly when the temperature changes. If you fill to the brim, the contents overflow when the pump is fitted and soil the thread.
Can I reuse the amber PET bottle with pump?
Yes, the bottle can be used again after washing and drying. The pump is cleaned by pumping clean water and air through it, but residues of the previous contents are hard to remove from the mechanism. If you change the formula or use products with a different scent, it is better to keep the bottle and replace the pump with a new one.
