Product description

Glass pharmaceutical bottle, tall, black cap, 50 ml is a set consisting of an amber glass bottle with a volume of 50 ml and a black plastic screw cap for the 18/410 neck finish. The dark glass reduces exposure to light, so it is particularly suitable for contents that are sensitive to light: essential oil blends, face and massage oils, oil serums, tinctures and herbal macerates. The tall, slim shape takes up little space on a shelf.

The cap with a liner closes the bottle without a dispensing element, so the contents are poured or measured out separately. The set as a whole is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the glass pharmaceutical bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the cap does not, so the set is intended for cosmetic products.

What it is suitable for

  • Oil-based products – glass does not react with vegetable or essential oils and does not absorb fragrance, so it suits your own blends, body oils and oil serums.
  • Alcohol-based contents – tinctures, alcohol-based fragrance compositions or solvent-based preparations that would gradually soften plastic bottles.
  • Samples and test batches – a volume of 50 ml is enough to try out a formulation or for a smaller retail size.
  • Amber glass – with oils and essential oils, it slows down changes in fragrance and colour. For ingredients that are not sensitive to light, the benefit is at least that the contents are not visible and the bottle looks uniform.

Volume and filling

The nominal volume of 50 ml is the amount the packaging is designed for in normal filling. The brimful volume is larger and is given in the parameters. The difference provides a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the neck, otherwise the contents are pushed into the thread when the cap is screwed on and the cap does not seal.

When filling oils and alcohol-based preparations, leave free space below the neck. The contents expand when warmed, and the liner in the cap may then not be able to withstand the pressure.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and let them dry completely. Residual water would introduce moisture into an anhydrous oil product, and with it the risk of microbial growth.

Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Do not pour hot contents into a cold bottle or the other way round; first let the bottle reach the same temperature as its surroundings. Hand-tighten the polypropylene cap, without tools. Overtightening deforms the liner, and the seal is then more likely to get worse than better.

After thorough washing, the bottle can be used again. Check the cap each time you reuse it. If the liner has aged or has come into contact with concentrated essential oils, replace the cap with a new one.

Some essential oils and solvents may gradually damage the plastic cap and its liner. With concentrated blends, check how the closure behaves with the specific formulation before you fill a whole batch.

If a plain cap does not suit you, you will find closures with the same neck type, such as a dropper or a pump, as well as ready-made bottle and closure combinations, in the Handymade range. With your own combination, check the seal and the dispensing with the specific contents.

After use, the glass bottle goes into glass recycling and the cap into plastic recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 50 ml amber glass pharmaceutical bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass reduces the amount of light reaching the contents, so it is suitable for essential oils, vegetable oils and tinctures, which change faster in light. No clear or tinted glass provides complete protection. For this reason, store the bottle away from direct sunlight and at a stable temperature.
How much can actually be filled into the 50 ml pharmaceutical bottle?
The bottle is designed to be filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml. Physically it holds more when filled to the brim, and the exact value is given in the parameters, but this space serves as a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents. If it is filled up to the neck, the contents get into the thread when the cap is screwed on and the cap stops sealing.
Is the pharmaceutical bottle set with a black cap suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is not approved for food contact. Only the glass pharmaceutical bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the plastic cap does not. The whole set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics and is intended for cosmetic products, for example oils, serums and tinctures.
Is the 50 ml glass pharmaceutical bottle suitable for essential oils and alcohol-based tinctures?
Yes, glass does not react with essential oils or alcohol and does not absorb fragrance, so it is more suitable for these contents than plastic. Caution is needed with the plastic cap, which may gradually soften or lose its seal with concentrated essential oils. Check it with your specific blend and replace it if necessary.
How do I prepare the pharmaceutical bottle before the first filling, and can it be reused?
Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and let them dry completely. After thorough washing, you can fill the glass bottle repeatedly. Check the cap each time you reuse it. Do not rely on a damaged or softened liner, and replace the closure with a new one.
Which closure fits the 50 ml glass pharmaceutical bottle?
The bottle has an 18/410 neck finish and is supplied in the set with a plain black cap. Droppers, pumps and other closures in the Handymade range have the same neck type, so they can be swapped depending on how you want to dispense the contents. With any combination of your own, test whether the closure seals with your contents.
