Product description
The blue glass bottle with a lotion pump is designed for face and body creams, emulsions and milks that are dispensed in small amounts by pressing the pump. Blue glass partly filters light, so it also suits formulations with vegetable oils and active ingredients that are sensitive to light. The contents come out of the bottle without touching it with your fingers, which helps keep the cream clean during use.
The set consists of a glass medicine bottle with an 18 mm neck and a black plastic PP lotion pump with a dip tube that draws up the contents from the bottom. The nominal volume of 100 ml corresponds to a standard pack of face cream or a smaller pack of body milk. The black top of the pump contrasts with the blue glass.
What the set is suitable for
The pump needs contents that flow. The consistency should allow the dip tube to draw them up and the mechanism to push them through the nozzle without clogging.
- Face creams and O/W emulsions – day and night creams of medium thickness that are dispensed in small portions.
- Body milks and lighter body creams – at a volume of 100 ml, more of a travel or trial pack.
- Gel creams and cream serums – lighter textures come out of the pump smoothly and without spraying.
- Make-up removing milks and liquid cleansing emulsions – dispensing into the palm is more convenient for rinse-off products than pouring from the neck.
Thick balms, body butters, ointments with beeswax and products with scrub particles cannot be reliably pushed through a lotion pump. Very runny water-based contents, such as toners, are better dispensed with a fine mist sprayer or a dropper.
How the pump works
One press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml of the contents. For a larger dose or a larger area of the body, press several times. After the pump is fitted to a full bottle, the dip tube and the pump chamber are full of air, so the first few presses are usually empty and serve to draw up the contents.
How the pump behaves depends on the viscosity of the particular formulation. A cream that sets more than expected after cooling may come out unevenly or not at all. It is therefore advisable to adjust the consistency during formulation development, rather than leaving it until filling.
Before filling the whole batch, fill one bottle as a trial and leave it to stand for at least a day. Then check that the pump dispenses evenly after a few presses, that the contents do not collect in the nozzle and that it does not drip between uses.
Nominal and total volume
The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for in standard filling, and it is filled up to that level. The total brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck, and you will find it in the parameters. The difference between them leaves room for the immersed dip tube and the pump body, which take up part of the space once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. A bottle filled to the brim would overflow when the pump is fitted.
Preparation and filling
Before first use, wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the dip tube or on the walls of the glass would dilute the preserved emulsion and could affect its stability.
Emulsions are filled into glass only after cooling, ideally at room temperature. For thickened creams, filling through a funnel with a wide neck or from a dispensing bottle helps, so that the product does not catch on the inside of the neck and the thread stays clean. The pump is then fitted straight on and tightened by hand so that it seals, without excessive force.
Glass does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature well. A hot emulsion or hot water used for cleaning can cause it to crack, so let the bottle come to temperature first and fill or wash it with lukewarm contents.
Good to know
The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and the relevant declaration of conformity is available with the product. It is not intended for food. For each formulation, we recommend checking in the finished formulation that the contents do not react with the pump, especially with a high proportion of essential oils or other solvents.
The bottle can be reused. After it is emptied, wash it in warm water with washing-up liquid, rinse it and disinfect it in the same way as before the first filling. Rinse the pump by immersing the dip tube in clean water and pressing several times until clean water comes out of the nozzle. Dried cream residues in the nozzle are harder to remove, so it is worth cleaning it immediately after the contents are used up.
Other closures with the same neck type, which is given in the parameters, also fit the bottle, and ready-made combinations of bottle plus closure are available in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness and dispensing with the specific formulation. For recycling, glass is sorted separately, and the plastic PP pump is separated from the bottle and put with plastics.
