Product description

This amber plastic medicine bottle with a nominal volume of 30 ml and a black aluminium cap is used for filling small quantities of liquid cosmetics. The amber PET reduces the amount of light reaching the contents, so it also suits products that are sensitive to light, such as oils prone to oxidation or active ingredients sensitive to UV radiation. The bottle is light and does not break, which you will appreciate for samples, travel sizes and small batches that you send to customers. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics.

What the set consists of

  • Bottle – an amber PET medicine bottle with an 18 mm neck. The narrow neck allows you to pour the contents in a thin stream or by the drop even without a dropper, but it slows down dispensing of thicker textures.
  • Cap – a black aluminium screw cap with an 18 mm thread. Inside it has a sealing liner made of foam polyethylene, which presses against the neck when the cap is tightened and seals the contents in. The aluminium shell gives the closure a firm, smooth surface and sets the packaging apart from ordinary plastic caps.

What it is suitable for

A volume of 30 ml suits products that are used in small doses and used up within a few weeks. Typical contents of the medicine bottle include face serums, concentrates with active ingredients, face and nail oils, diluted blends of essential oils in a carrier oil, toners and hydrosols. The same format is used for samples of larger packs or as part of gift sets.

Creams and thick emulsions are difficult to fill and dispense through a narrow neck, so jars or bottles with a wider neck are more suitable for them. If you need to dispense by the drop, you will find droppers and other closures with the same neck type in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend testing the seal and dispensing with your specific formulation.

Nominal and brimful volume

The nominal volume is the quantity the bottle is intended for in normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical volume up to the top of the neck and is always somewhat larger. The difference provides a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The medicine bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim, otherwise the contents are pushed into the thread when the cap is tightened and the closure does not seal.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely.

PET is not intended for hot filling. Let oils, emulsions and toners cool to room temperature before filling, as warm contents may deform the wall of the bottle.

Undiluted essential oils and solvents are among the substances that can damage plastics. For formulations with a higher proportion of essential oils, for alcohol-based tinctures and similar contents, we recommend first testing the behaviour of the packaging on a single piece and monitoring both the wall of the bottle and the liner of the cap.

After filling, tighten the cap by hand without force and check the seal by turning the bottle upside down for a few minutes. Overtightening may permanently compress the foam liner, and the closure then seals less well.

The bottle and the cap can be reused after washing. Before each new filling, check that the liner in the cap is intact and free of residues of the previous contents.

The amber PET medicine bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food. The aluminium cap does not have this assessment, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

Before disposal, separate the bottle and the cap; the PET bottle goes in plastics recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber PET medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, the amber colour of the PET reduces the amount of light reaching the contents. It is therefore suitable for oils prone to oxidation and for serums with active ingredients sensitive to UV radiation. The packaging does not provide complete darkness, so store filled bottles out of direct sunlight.
To what level should a 30 ml plastic medicine bottle be filled?
To the nominal volume of 30 ml, not to the brim. The space above the liquid serves as a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If you fill to the brim, the contents get into the thread when the cap is tightened, soil the closure and the bottle does not seal.
Is the PET medicine bottle suitable for oils, toners and alcohol-based tinctures?
Yes for vegetable oils, toners, hydrosols and water-based serums; these contents are commonly filled into PET. For alcohol-based tinctures and for blends with a higher proportion of undiluted essential oils, we recommend testing the behaviour of the packaging on a single piece, as these substances may damage plastic over time.
Does the aluminium cap on the plastic medicine bottle seal without any additional sealing?
Yes, the cap has a sealing liner made of foam polyethylene inside, which closes the neck once tightened by hand. No additional seal is added. Check the seal with your specific contents by turning the filled bottle upside down, especially with thinner formulations and before sending by post.
Can the plastic medicine bottle with an aluminium cap be reused?
Yes, after washing and disinfecting with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, the bottle and the cap can be used again. Let the packaging dry completely and check the condition of the liner in the cap. If it is compressed, cracked or soaked with the previous contents, replace the closure.
Is the plastic medicine bottle and aluminium cap set approved for food contact?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. The amber PET medicine bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food, but the aluminium cap with the foam liner does not have this assessment. For homemade oils or syrups, therefore, choose a bottle with a closure that also has a food-contact certificate.
