Product description

A clear plastic medicine bottle with a volume of 10 ml and a black lotion pump make a ready-to-use set for small packs of creams, face serums, eye gels and light emulsions. The pump dispenses a small, repeatable amount with each press, so it suits products that the customer dispenses precisely and without touching the contents with their fingers. The bottle is made of PET. It is lightweight and does not shatter when dropped, as glass does, which is appreciated by makers who send samples by post or offer travel sizes. The clear wall shows the colour and consistency of the contents, which is useful for coloured serums, tinted creams or gels, where appearance sells.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The certificate for direct food contact applies to the bottle only; the lotion pump does not have it, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

What the set is suitable for

  • Face serums and eye creams – the small volume and precise dispensing match products that are used in pea-sized amounts.
  • Samples and testers – with 10 ml, a few doses are enough to try the product, and the customer receives it with the same type of closure as the full-size pack.
  • Hand creams for your handbag – the bottle fits even in a small pouch.
  • Light emulsions and gels – the pump works best with contents that at least flow slowly. A thick balm or ointment will not pass through it.

How the lotion pump works

The pump, screwed onto the neck of the bottle, draws the contents up through a tube from the bottom. Before first use, press the head several times to prime the system so that the first dose is dispensed in full. The dose per press is small and approximately the same each time, which makes it easier to dispense active serums, where only a few drops are applied per use.

When filling, fill the bottle up to the nominal volume, fit the pump and tighten it by hand. The thread on the plastic does not need to be tightened by force, and doing so could damage it.

The pump tube is supplied longer than the height of the bottle. Before fitting, shorten it with sharp scissors using a diagonal cut so that it ends just above the bottom. A tube that is too long bends in the bottle and the pump draws in air.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling, in this case 10 ml. The total volume up to the rim of the neck is slightly larger. The difference serves as a reserve for the submerged part of the pump and tube. For this reason, fill up to the nominal volume. A bottle filled to the brim will overflow when the pump is screwed on and the contents will get into the thread.

Good to know

Clear PET does not provide protection from light. Serums with vitamin C, retinoids or light-sensitive plant extracts last a shorter time in clear packaging than in amber or blue glass. For such formulations, we recommend dark packaging or selling the product in a box.

The packaging is not intended for aggressive chemicals. For anhydrous products with a high proportion of essential oils, for alcohol tinctures or for contents with solvents, we recommend checking how the packaging behaves on a single piece, for example with a one-week test at room temperature. Watch whether the wall turns matte or soft, or whether the pump seal swells.

Hot filling is not suitable for PET, and the packaging must be protected from heat. Let the emulsion cool before filling, as warm contents deform the bottle.

The pump draws the contents from the bottom, but a small residue always remains below the end of the tube. For expensive active serums, take this into account when calculating the amount that can actually be used and in the information for the customer.

Before first filling, wash the bottle and the pump in warm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid, rinse them, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely upside down. Residual water in the tube would introduce a microbial risk into the product. The set can be reused, but we recommend a new pump when changing the type of product.

For recycling, the PET bottle and the polypropylene pump are separated and sorted individually according to their material codes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 10 ml plastic medicine bottle with lotion pump suitable for a face serum?
Yes, the set is suitable for serums with a consistency from liquid to medium-thick. The pump draws the contents up through a tube from the bottom, so the product must at least flow slowly. It dispenses water-based serums with hyaluronic acid, light emulsions or oil serums without problems. For light-sensitive serums, bear in mind that clear PET does not protect against light.
Can a thick cream or balm be dispensed through the 18 mm lotion pump?
No, a thick cream, ointment or balm will not pass through a lotion pump with a tube. The pump is designed for emulsions and gels that can be drawn up. A cream with a consistency that does not run off the walls of a jar will get stuck in the tube, and pressing the head will dispense nothing. For such products, choose a jar or a tube.
Why does the pump on the 10 ml bottle not dispense after filling?
Most often because the system is not primed or the tube does not reach the contents. At first use, press the head several times in a row until the full dose comes out. If the pump still does not work, check that the tube is not bent against the bottom of the bottle and that it has been shortened to the correct length.
Can I fill a vitamin C serum into the clear PET bottle with a pump?
From the packaging point of view, yes; from the point of view of the stability of the contents, with a limitation. The set is declared as suitable for cosmetics, but the clear wall lets light through, and vitamin C and other light-sensitive active ingredients lose their effect faster in it. Sell such a serum in a box or choose packaging made of amber or blue glass.
Is the bottle and pump set also suitable for food or kitchen oils?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. The certificate for direct food contact applies to the PET bottle only; the lotion pump does not have it. For home-made oils or syrups, therefore, use a bottle with a closure whose suitability for food contact is stated in the parameters.
Which closure fits the 10 ml plastic medicine bottle apart from the lotion pump?
Closures with the same neck type, which is stated in the parameters, fit the bottle, for example caps, droppers or sprayers. You can find ready-made combinations of bottle and closure in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
