Product description

This clear plastic medicine bottle with treatment pump, 10 ml, is used for filling and dispensing oil products in small volumes. The PET bottle is lightweight and does not break if dropped. The black treatment pump releases a measured dose with each press, and the clear overcap protects the pump head from dust and from accidental pressing in a handbag or travel bag. You can see through the clear walls how much content is left. The 10 ml volume suits facial oils, oil serums, nail and cuticle oils, beard oil or samples of massage and body oils. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics.

What it is suitable for

  • Facial and hair oils – a dose from the pump is enough for one facial treatment or for the hair ends, and the oil does not spill or drip onto the sink.
  • Nail, cuticle and beard oil – the small volume and precise dispensing suit products of which only a few drops are used a day.
  • Samples and travel packs – 10 ml is a common volume for testing a formulation with customers or for trying a new oil blend before making a larger batch.
  • Blends of carrier oils with essential oils – at normal cosmetic dilution they can be filled into PET without problems. With a high proportion of essential oils, check how the material behaves first.

How the pump works

One press releases approximately 0.18 ml of content. When using the pump for the first time, press it several times without product until the tube fills with oil and the dose comes out evenly. The pump is designed for oils and liquids of similar fluidity. Thick balms, butters or gels with high viscosity cannot be pumped through it.

The dip tube is longer than the bottle. Trim it before fitting so that it ends just above the bottom. After each use, cover the pump head with the clear overcap, otherwise dust collects on it and oil left at the outlet thickens over time.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely. Residual water does not belong in an oil product.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume of 10 ml is the volume the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total brimful volume is larger because it includes the space up to the neck. The difference is a reserve for the tube and the pump body and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Therefore, fill the bottle only up to the nominal volume. A bottle filled to the brim overflows when the pump is screwed on, and oil seeps into the thread.

Good to know

Clear PET does not protect the contents from light. Oils sensitive to oxidation, for example linseed, rosehip or borage oil, age faster in clear packaging. Store them out of direct sunlight or consider dark glass. With oils that have a stable profile, such as jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, this difference plays a smaller role.

PET withstands common cosmetic oils. With undiluted essential oils and solvents, however, it may turn cloudy or soften over time. For highly concentrated blends, we recommend a trial filling and a check after several weeks.

Only the bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact. The pump and the overcap do not have one, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics and must not be used for homemade oils or syrups.

Both the bottle and the pump can be reused. Wash the bottle with warm water and washing-up liquid and disinfect it. Rinse the pump by pumping warm water through it and then air until it comes out dry. Oil residues inside the mechanism cannot be removed completely, so reuse is suitable for the same type of product. The PET bottle goes in plastic recycling; unscrew the pump before recycling and dispose of it separately.

Closures with the same neck type (see the parameters) and other ready-made combinations of a bottle with a dropper or sprayer can be found in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness and dispensing with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

How much oil does one press of the 18 mm treatment pump dispense?
One press of the 18 mm treatment pump releases approximately 0.18 ml. The exact amount depends on the viscosity of the oil and on whether the pump was primed with several presses without product before use. With thicker oils the dose may be slightly smaller and comes out more slowly.
Is the 10 ml bottle with treatment pump suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is not approved for food contact. Only the plastic bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the pump and the clear overcap do not. The whole assembly is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics, that is, for facial, hair and body oils. Do not fill it with edible oils or syrups.
Does a clear PET bottle protect oils from light?
No, clear PET lets light through and does not protect the contents from it. Oils prone to oxidation, such as linseed or rosehip oil, are better stored in the dark or in amber or blue glass. With more stable oils and quick use of a 10 ml pack, the clear packaging is suitable, and it has the advantage of letting you check the remaining amount.
Can pure essential oil or alcohol be filled into a PET bottle?
We do not recommend undiluted essential oils in a PET bottle, as the material may turn cloudy or soften over time. Cosmetic blends with a normal proportion of essential oils in a carrier oil can be filled without problems. For alcohol tinctures and concentrated blends, make a trial filling and check the packaging after a few weeks. The pump is, moreover, designed for oils.
Why is the 10 ml bottle not filled to the brim?
The 10 ml bottle is filled to the nominal volume because the upper part is a reserve for the tube and the pump body. If it is filled to the brim, the contents are pushed into the thread when the pump is screwed on and the neck stays greasy. The reserve also allows for the expansion of the oil at higher temperatures.
