Product description

A clear 10 ml PET medicine bottle with a black aluminium cap is packaging for small quantities of liquid cosmetics: serum samples, travel-size face and body oils, diluted fragrance blends or toners to try out. PET is lightweight and does not break when dropped, so the set withstands shipping samples to customers as well as being carried in a handbag. Through the clear walls you can see the colour of the contents and how much product is left, which you will appreciate with testers and samples more than with a large pack.

The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The certificate for direct food contact applies to the bottle alone; the aluminium cap does not have it, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

What it is suitable for

  • Samples and testers – a small volume is enough for several applications of a serum or oil, and customers can try the product without buying the full pack.
  • Travel packs – a face oil, serum or toner for a few days, with no risk of breakage in luggage.
  • Oil blends and serums – a carrier oil with active ingredients or a diluted fragrance, where the clear wall shows the clarity and colour of the blend.
  • Decanting larger packs – pouring off a smaller quantity of an ingredient for the workshop or a case, so that the large bottle stays closed.

How the set works

The cap consists of an aluminium shell with an inner foamed polyethylene liner (EPE). When tightened by hand, the liner sits on the rim of the neck and seals it. It does not need to be tightened with great force. Before sending out samples, it is worth laying the filled bottle on its side or standing it upside down for a few hours and checking that the contents do not leak. The behaviour of the seal also depends on the viscosity and composition of the product.

The contents are poured out of the medicine bottle directly through the neck. If you need to dispense in drops or spray, you will find closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the seal and dispensing with your specific formulation.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in an anhydrous oil or serum is undesirable and shortens its shelf life.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume of 10 ml is the quantity the medicine bottle is designed for in normal filling. The total brimful volume is larger, because it also includes the space up to the neck. This difference serves as a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. For that reason, fill up to the nominal volume, not to the brim; otherwise part of the product is pushed out when closing, or remains on the cap liner.

Good to know

  • Light – clear PET does not protect the contents from light. Store oils and serums that are sensitive to oxidation in a box or in the dark.
  • Essential oils and solvents – the material should not be exposed to aggressive chemicals. For undiluted essential oils, perfume compositions and alcohol-based preparations, first run a compatibility test on one bottle.
  • Heat – PET is not intended for hot filling. Let the product cool to room temperature and do not store finished packs near a heat source.
  • Reuse – after washing and disinfection, the bottle and the cap can be used again. For the cap, check that the foam liner is not compressed, torn or soaked with the previous contents.
  • Recycling – the bottle goes in the plastics bin as PET, while the aluminium cap with the polyethylene liner is sorted separately, so separate them before disposal.

Undiluted essential oils and preparations with a high solvent content do not belong in a clear PET medicine bottle without a prior test. The wall of the bottle may turn cloudy, soften or deform.

Frequently asked questions

Does the clear 10 ml PET medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
No, clear PET does not block light. It is suitable for products that are not affected by light, or for samples that are used up within a short time. Store oils prone to oxidation and serums with light-sensitive active ingredients in a box or in a dark place, or choose amber or blue glass for them.
Is the 10 ml plastic medicine bottle filled up to the brim?
No, it is filled up to the nominal volume of 10 ml. The space above this level up to the neck is a reserve for the cap and for the expansion of the contents during warmer storage or transport. If you fill the bottle to the brim, the product is pushed onto the cap liner when closing and leaking may occur.
Can the PET medicine bottle with an aluminium cap be reused?
Yes, after thorough washing, disinfection with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and drying. When reusing, pay attention to the foam liner in the cap: if it is compressed, damaged or soaked with the previous contents, the seal may no longer hold and it is advisable to replace the cap. Do not use a bottle with a cloudy or softened wall again.
Is the PET medicine bottle suitable for essential oils and alcohol-based preparations?
A clear PET medicine bottle is not recommended for undiluted essential oils and perfume compositions without a compatibility test, because the material should not be exposed to aggressive chemicals. Diluted fragrance blends in a carrier oil are a common use. For alcohol-based toners and tinctures, we recommend filling one bottle as a trial and checking the wall and the seal after a few days.
Is the medicine bottle set with an aluminium cap approved for food?
Not as a whole. The certificate for direct food contact applies to the plastic bottle alone; the black aluminium cap does not have it, so the entire set is used for cosmetic products. Suitability for contact with cosmetics is declared for both the bottle and the cap, and the declaration of conformity is provided with the product.
Can other closures be fitted to the 10 ml plastic medicine bottle?
Yes, the neck thread type is stated in the parameters. You will find closures with the same neck type, for example a dropper or a fine mist sprayer, and ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation before you fit it to a whole batch.
