Product description

This clear plastic medicine bottle, 10 ml, with a black fine mist sprayer is suitable for water-based and thin alcohol-based liquids applied as a spray: face and hair mists, toners, hydrosols or a travel size of perfume. The clear PET wall shows the colour and the remaining amount of the contents, the plastic does not break in a handbag or bathroom, and the set is lighter than glass. Both the bottle and the sprayer are declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The bottle also has a separate certificate for direct food contact, but the set with the sprayer as a whole is intended for cosmetic products.

What the set is suitable for

  • Face and hair mists – thin water-based solutions with moisturising ingredients, hydrosols or mixtures of hydrosol with glycerine are sprayed as a fine mist and cover the skin or hair evenly.
  • Toners and refreshing sprays – a small volume is used up quickly, so it also suits unpreserved products that are used within a few days.
  • Samples and travel sizes – the bottle holds a trial portion of a new formulation for a customer, or a decant from a larger bottle of perfume for travelling.
  • Alcohol-based sprays – perfumes and fragrance sprays with an alcohol base are dispensed with the sprayer without the hands touching the contents.

How to work with the set

The sprayer is screwed onto the neck of the bottle, it seals as it is tightened, and the contents are dispensed by pressing the head. One press releases approximately 0.14 ml of liquid, which for a full bottle corresponds to about seventy doses. The dip tube of the sprayer is longer than the bottle, so before first use trim it with a sharp knife so that it ends just above the bottom. Then press the sprayer several times to prime it, so that the tube and the nozzle fill with liquid.

The sprayer is designed for liquids with a viscosity close to water. Pure vegetable oils, emulsions, gels and thick serums either do not spray at all or run out in a stream and quickly clog the head. Undissolved particles, herb residues or sediment cause the same problem.

Infusions, hydrosols with sediment and solutions with dissolved powder should be filtered through a paper filter before filling. A clear liquid without particles is essential to prevent the sprayer nozzle from clogging.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is intended for in normal filling. The physical volume up to the neck is slightly larger. The difference is a reserve for the dip tube and the body of the sprayer, which take up part of the internal space once screwed on. Fill the bottle only up to the nominal volume. If it is filled to the brim, the liquid overflows when the sprayer is fitted, reaches the thread and may leak.

Good to know

Preparation before first filling. Wash the bottle with warm water, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely. Spray clean water or alcohol through the sprayer, and then press it several times without liquid to empty it.

Light. Clear PET does not protect the contents from light. Store products with light-sensitive ingredients, for example with vitamin C or a high proportion of essential oils, in the dark, or choose dark glass for them.

Compatibility with the contents. Water-based solutions, hydrosols and perfumes with a standard alcohol content are typical contents for this set. For concentrated essential oils, a high proportion of solvents or unusual raw materials, first fill a single bottle and after a few weeks check the wall of the bottle, the dip tube and the seal.

The PET bottle and the PP sprayer both deform with heat. Do not fill the bottle with hot liquid, let the finished product cool before filling, and do not wash the set in a dishwasher.

Reuse. Once the contents are used up, the bottle and the sprayer can be washed and filled again. Always spray clean water through the sprayer, otherwise dried residues of the product will clog the nozzle. If you change the contents, for example from perfume to a face mist, bear in mind that the scent may linger in the plastic.

Recycling. The bottle is made of PET and the sprayer of polypropylene – two different plastics. Before disposal, unscrew the set so that both parts can be sorted separately.

Other closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations of this bottle with other closures can be found in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, check the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a clear plastic bottle with a sprayer protect the contents from light?
No, clear PET does not block light and the contents are exposed to it in the same way as in clear glass. For products with light-sensitive ingredients, dark glass or storage in a closed cabinet is better. Face mists, hydrosols and perfumes that are used up within a few weeks are normally stored in a clear bottle without problems.
How much liquid does the sprayer release with one press?
One press of the head releases approximately 0.14 ml. When filled to the nominal volume of 10 ml, that means about seventy doses per bottle. The actual number depends on how far the head is pressed and how much of the contents is used when the sprayer is first primed.
Can a plastic bottle with a sprayer be used for oil or serum?
This set is not suitable for pure oils, emulsions and thicker serums. The sprayer is designed for liquids with a viscosity close to water, and thicker contents run out in a stream or clog the nozzle. For oils and serums, choose a bottle with a dropper or a pump; this set is for water-based and thin alcohol-based solutions.
How do you clean a plastic bottle with a sprayer, and can it be reused?
The bottle and the sprayer can be reused after thorough washing. Wash the bottle with warm water and disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, spray clean water through the sprayer and then empty it by pressing without liquid. Do not use hot water or a dishwasher, as both PET and polypropylene deform with heat.
Is the bottle and sprayer set suitable for contact with food?
The set as a whole is not approved for contact with food; it is intended for cosmetic products. Only the PET bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact, and the sprayer has no such assessment. If you need packaging for food use, choose a bottle with a closure that also has a food-contact certificate.
