Product description

A clear plastic medicine bottle with a nominal volume of 10 ml and a black lotion pump with an 18 mm thread is packaging for serums, light creams and facial emulsions that are applied in small amounts. The contents are dispensed by pressing the pump head, fingers do not touch the product, and each press delivers approximately the same dose. The clear wall shows the colour and the remaining amount, and the plastic is light and does not break when dropped.

The 10 ml volume suits samples and test batches, serums with active ingredients, eye-area creams, or travel packs of products that are used up quickly after opening. Both the bottle and the pump are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

What the set is suitable for

  • Serums and light emulsions – thinner products pass through the pump dip tube without resistance, and the dose stays even from the first press to the last.
  • Eye creams and creams for small areas – one press gives approximately as much as is applied to the eye area, the lips or small spots on the face.
  • Samples and test batches – when tuning a recipe, you fill 10 ml from a small batch and test the finished product directly in the same packaging the customer will receive.
  • Travel pack – it weighs little and does not break in a bag.

How the pump works

The lotion pump draws the contents up through the dip tube from the bottom of the bottle and releases approximately 0.12 ml with one press of the head. On first use, press the head several times without product until the dip tube fills. After that, a dose comes out with every press. Thick ointments, balms with a higher proportion of wax and products with solid particles, such as scrubs, will not pass through the dip tube or will clog the pump. Choose a jar for such products.

The pump dip tube is longer than the bottle. Before first assembly, shorten it with a sharp knife using a diagonal cut so that it ends just above the bottom. The pump will then draw up the remaining contents as well, and the dip tube will not bend when the pump is screwed on.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is intended for under normal filling. The total brimful volume is the physical volume of the entire inner space up to the neck and is larger. The difference is a reserve for the dip tube and the lower part of the pump, which take up some space once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. Fill up to the nominal volume and screw on the pump only afterwards. If you fill to the brim, the contents are pushed out through the neck, soil the thread, and the closure may not seal.

Good to know

Clear PET does not protect the contents from light. Store products with sensitive active ingredients and oil-based serums in a box or in a drawer, or choose amber or blue glass for them.

The pump is not an airless system. Air enters the bottle with every press, so creams and serums with a water phase need a preservative just as in an ordinary bottle.

PET tolerates both water-based and oil-based contents. With concentrated essential oils, a high proportion of alcohol or solvents, we recommend testing the material on a trial piece to check that the wall does not turn cloudy, soften or change the scent of the contents.

Only the bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact. The lotion pump does not have one, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

Both parts can be refilled after washing. At the end of their life, they belong in plastics recycling separately: the bottle is made of PET and the pump of PP.

Frequently asked questions

Does a clear PET bottle with a pump protect the contents from light?
No, clear PET lets light through and does not protect the contents from it. Keep products whose active ingredients or oils tolerate light poorly in a box or in the dark when stored in this bottle. If the packaging is to be exposed to light for longer, amber or blue glass, which dampens light, is more suitable.
How do I fill a bottle with a lotion pump so that it does not overflow?
Fill up to the nominal volume of 10 ml and screw on the pump only afterwards. Once assembled, the dip tube with the lower part of the pump takes up some of the space above the contents, and if you filled to the brim, the contents would be pushed out through the neck onto the thread. Thinner products are filled using a funnel or a syringe, while thicker creams get into the narrow neck more easily from a bag with the corner cut off.
What products will pass through an 18 mm lotion pump?
Serums, facial lotions, gels and light to medium-thick creams pass through the dip tube without problems. Thick ointments, balms with wax and products with solid particles will not pass through the dip tube or will clog the pump. For a thicker recipe, we recommend a trial fill. If the dose comes out unevenly or with great effort, the product belongs in a jar.
Does a cream in a plastic bottle with a pump need a preservative?
Yes, if it contains water or a water phase. The lotion pump is not an airless system: air enters the bottle with every press, so the contents need the same protection as in an ordinary closed package. The advantage of the pump is that fingers do not touch the contents, but the lower risk of contamination does not replace a preservative. Anhydrous oil serums do not need a preservative, and protection against oxidation is provided by an antioxidant.
Can a bottle with a lotion pump be washed and reused?
Yes, both parts can be washed and refilled repeatedly. Wash the bottle in warm water with washing-up liquid, rinse it, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely. Rinse the pump by immersing the dip tube in water and then in ethanol and pressing the head several times. Before refilling, check that the head still springs back and that the dose comes out evenly.
Is the bottle and lotion pump set suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact, and the lotion pump does not have such a certificate. If you need packaging for homemade oils or syrups, choose a bottle with a closure that is also declared for food use.
