Do you know what the difference is between regular coconut oil and the fractionated version?
Can you use or substitute both equally in your formulations?

Coconut oil has become an essential part of not only the cosmetic but also the food world. It has many benefits, nutrient content and the right ratio of fatty acids that make it the perfect choice for beautiful and healthy hair and skin

It seemed to be literally an unbeatable ingredient in cosmetics. And yet, there was something that could trump it. It's its brother - the fractionated version of coconut oil.

What is this fractionated coconut oil anyway?

It's made from standard coconut oil through a process called fractionation. This is the process of steam distillation and hydrolysis that removes long-chain fatty acids, such as lauric acid, from the oil C12 and only the medium chain fatty acids remain - C10 capric acid and C8 caprylic acid. This is actually a heating and cooling process, with the longer chain acids being rather cold in the cooling process and thus naturally separating. At some point they separate completely and fractionation is complete. There is no need to worry about coconut oil losing its ability to hydrate through this process, as the remaining carpic and caprylic acid chains have significant hydrating effects

Coconut fractionated oil is also sometimes called MCT oil - it stands for medium-chain triglyceride, which is just thethis is the reason why the oil is so important, because after the fractionation process, it is the medium-chain fatty acids that remain in the oil.

What are the advantages and benefits of coconut fractionated oil?

CONSISTENCY
First and foremost, it is its consistency, as opposed to the classic "coconut oil", that makes it a carrier oil for your formulations. In fact, you can put the oil in the refrigerator, it will not change its consistency - it will not harden. It is therefore much easier to work with

HYDRATION
As we have already mentioned, it is the fatty acids that remain in the oil that are responsible for the extra moisturizingoil's moisturizing abilities, so you can use it directly on the body or in your own skin-moisturizing formulations. It's great just after a shower, or even in the summer after sunbathing, it will leave your skin smooth and glowing.

MASSAGES
There's no need to heat the fractionated oil and you can apply it straight away - its consistency ensures a smooth and gliding motion, while also allowing you to add essential oil

OTHER USES
- fractionated coconut oil works as an excellent make-up remover
- by having a high moisturizing capacity, it is a great way to moisturize extremely dry body parts, such as cracked heels
- because of its consistency, it is much easier to use fractionated oil to nourish the hair - it allows the oil to be applied evenly from the roots to the tips of the hair, ensuring complete coverage and hydration
- the oil is also an excellent choice as an after-shave moisturiser - it soothes the skin minimising the appearance of red spots
