Product description
The black glass medicine bottle, 15 ml, with a black screw cap is packaging for small quantities of liquid cosmetics that are harmed by light. The glossy black glass does not let light through, so the contents are protected from it and cannot be seen from the outside. It suits facial oils with a higher proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, serums with sensitive active ingredients, essential oil blends, tinctures and concentrates.
Glass does not react with oils, alcohol or essential oils, so the packaging can hold contents that damage plastic over time. The 15 ml volume suits a sample, a travel size or a small amount of a more expensive serum that is used up within a few weeks. The bottle has the shape of a medicine bottle, and the cap supplied in the set fits it exactly and closes the packaging for normal storage and transport.
What the set is suitable for
- Facial and hair oils – the dark packaging slows the oxidation of light-sensitive oils.
- Serums and concentrates – a small pack for products with vitamins, retinoids or plant extracts that are dispensed drop by drop.
- Essential oil blends and fragrance oils – the glass resists essential oils, which could soften plastic packaging.
- Tinctures and alcohol extracts – the alcohol does not leach anything from the glass and the cap closes the packaging tightly.
- Samples and test batches – when developing a formula, a trial batch fits comfortably into a 15 ml bottle.
Volume and filling
The nominal volume of the bottle is 15 ml. This is the amount the packaging is designed for with normal filling. The brimful volume is larger and gives the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between the two values is a reserve for the closure, any dropper or pump, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. You should therefore fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If you filled to the brim, the contents would be pushed out through the neck when the cap is screwed on and the cap might not seal properly.
Fill thicker serums and oils into the bottle through a small funnel or with a syringe. The narrow neck of a medicine bottle is otherwise easily soiled, and residue on the thread impairs the seal of the cap.
Closing and dispensing
The cap is made of polypropylene with an EPE liner that sits on the neck of the bottle and seals the packaging. It is a plain screw cap without a dispensing opening, so the contents are taken directly from the neck. Oil is poured out drop by drop by tilting the bottle, while serum is taken with a separate dropper or syringe, or poured into another container. This kind of closure is best suited to storing stock, samples and concentrates that are not opened every day.
If you need to dispense with a dropper, pump or sprayer, choose closures with the same neck finish as given in the parameters. You can find ready-made combinations of packaging and closure in the Handymade range. If you are combining parts yourself, we recommend checking the tightness and behaviour of the closure with your specific formulation.
Good to know
Contact with cosmetics and food. The set as a whole is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food, but the cap in the set does not. The set is therefore intended for cosmetics and is not declared as a whole for food use.
Preparation before first filling. Wash the bottle and cap before use, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the glass would bring moisture into an anhydrous oil or serum.
Reuse. The glass withstands repeated washing and disinfection, so the bottle can be used several times. Check the liner of the cap after longer use. If it is damaged or smells of the previous contents, replace the cap.
Glass and heat. Glass does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature well. Do not pour a hot mixture into a cold bottle, and let the contents cool to at least lukewarm before filling.
The level cannot be seen. Black glass is opaque, so you cannot check the remaining amount of contents by eye. For samples and test batches, it helps to label the filling date and quantity.
For contents that expand with heat, leave free space below the neck. A full bottle left in the sun or in a car may push the contents out through the thread.
Recycling. An empty, rinsed bottle belongs in glass recycling. Unscrew the cap and dispose of it with plastic.
