Product description

Black glass bottle with lotion pump, 50 ml

A set for creams that are dispensed by pressing the pump, without opening the packaging and without fingers touching the contents. It consists of a black glossy glass bottle with a nominal volume of 50 ml and a black lotion pump with a smoky overcap. It is suitable for creams, lotions, thick serums and gels. Black glass protects the contents from light, so it can also be filled with formulations containing more sensitive ingredients, for example vegetable oils, which lose their effect faster in light.

Glass does not react with common cosmetic ingredients, does not absorb fragrances or dyes, and can be reused. The pump is made of polypropylene (PP), and the smoky overcap protects the pump head from dirt and from being pressed accidentally during transport.

What it is suitable for

  • Face and eye creams – 50 ml corresponds to a standard face cream pack, and the pump measures out a small amount for a single use.
  • Body and face lotions – thinner emulsions are dispensed smoothly and without leaking.
  • Serums and gels with a creamy consistency – especially where you want to protect the contents from light and from air each time the packaging is opened.
  • Hand creams, aftershave balms, men’s cosmetics – black glossy glass suits a neutral or men’s brand design.

How the set works

The pump is screwed onto the neck of the bottle and the tube reaches the bottom. When you press the pump head, a measured amount of the contents is drawn up; one dose is approximately 0.14 ml. That is enough for a face cream or serum, while for a body lotion you press the pump several times. After fitting the pump on a new fill, prime it by pressing the pump head a few times until the tube fills.

The pump is designed for creamy and medium-thick textures. Very firm balms with a high wax content may not be drawn up by it, while very thin liquids may drip from the pump head. For your own formulation, we recommend checking the dispensing and leak-tightness with the specific formulation, ideally also after several days with the packaging lying on its side.

The pump tube is longer than the height of the bottle. Before fitting it, shorten it with a diagonal cut so that it ends just above the bottom. A diagonal cut prevents the end of the tube from sticking to the bottom and the pump from ceasing to draw up the product.

Volume and filling

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The brimful capacity given in the parameters is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference provides room for the tube and the body of the pump, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, the contents are pushed out around the thread when the pump is screwed on.

Good to know

  • Preparation before the first filling – wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Any water left in the tube would dilute the first doses.
  • Temperature of the contents – pour in the emulsion only after it has cooled to room temperature. Hot contents put strain on the glass and the plastic pump, and as they cool their volume decreases, which can draw air into the tube.
  • Contact with cosmetics – the bottle and the pump are declared suitable for use with cosmetic products.
  • Contact with food – only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food. The pump does not have one, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.
  • Reuse – you can wash the glass and use it again without limit. Rinse the pump with warm water by pumping it several times. When changing the formulation, a new pump is better, so that fragrances and emulsion residues are not carried over.
  • Other closures – closures with the same neck type fit the bottle on its own; you can find other ready-made combinations in the Handymade range.
  • Recycling – the bottle goes into glass waste and the pump into plastics. Before disposal, take the set apart and rinse the bottle.

Black glass and dispensing without opening the packaging together limit the access of light and air to the contents. For formulations with oils prone to oxidation, this is a more suitable combination than clear packaging with a screw cap.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, black glossy glass protects the contents from light. It is therefore suitable for creams and serums with light-sensitive ingredients, for example vegetable oils. However, the contents cannot be seen, so the fill level is checked by weight or by when the pump stops dispensing.
How much cream does the pump dispense per press?
One press dispenses approximately 0.14 ml. For a face cream one or two presses are enough, while for a body lotion you press the pump head several times. The actual amount depends on the thickness of the contents; with thicker textures the dose tends to be slightly smaller. With a new fill, the pump must first be primed by pressing it several times until the tube fills.
Can I put oil or a liquid serum in the bottle with the lotion pump?
The pump is designed for creamy and medium-thick textures. It will draw up an oil or a thin serum, but with a light liquid the contents may drip from the pump head and the dose will be less precise. For pure oils and thin serums, the same bottle with a dropper or with a mini trigger sprayer is more suitable. For your own formulation, we recommend testing how the pump behaves.
Can I use the set for food as well, for example for homemade oil?
No, the set as a whole is not approved for direct contact with food. Only the glass bottle on its own has a food contact certificate; the plastic pump does not have one. The bottle with the pump is therefore intended for cosmetics. If you want to use the black bottle for food, combine it with a closure that has its own food-contact approval.
How do I prepare the bottle and the pump before filling them with cream for the first time?
Wash both parts, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Shorten the pump tube with a diagonal cut to the height of the bottle so that it ends just above the bottom. Fill the bottle with the emulsion only after it has cooled to room temperature, and only up to the nominal volume of 50 ml, so that the contents do not run out around the thread when the pump is screwed on.
