Product description

The amber plastic bottle with a volume of 10 ml and a black lotion pump make a ready-to-use set for small packs of creams, gels and thicker serums. The amber colour reduces the amount of light reaching the contents, and PET is lightweight and does not break when dropped, so the set holds up in a cosmetic bag, while travelling and as a sample for customers. The contents are dispensed by the lotion pump in small doses, without reaching into the packaging with your fingers. You will appreciate this especially with eye creams, concentrated active products and any product that should stay uncontaminated for as long as possible.

What the set is suitable for

  • Eye and face creams – a small pack that dispenses precisely and is used up before the product starts to spoil.
  • Samples and testers – ten millilitres is enough for customers to try a formulation without you handing out full-size packs.
  • Thicker serums, gels and face balms – the lotion pump is designed for textures that do not flow on their own.
  • Travel pack of a favourite cream or lotion when a larger container is not suitable.

For very thin liquids, such as toners or water-based serums, a lotion pump is not a suitable closure. Such contents are dispensed inaccurately and drip easily. A fine mist sprayer or a dropper suits them better.

How to dispense and fill

One press of the pump dispenses approximately 0.12 ml of product, which for an eye cream corresponds to one application. The pump draws the contents up through a dip tube from the bottom, so with the tube at the correct length you will use up almost all of the contents.

The stated volume of 10 ml is the nominal volume: the amount the bottle is designed for with normal filling. The total volume to the brim is larger, because the bottle has an allowance above the nominal level for the dip tube and the pump head. It should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the neck. An overfilled bottle overflows when the pump is screwed on, and the contents leak out around the thread.

The pump is supplied with a dip tube longer than the height of this bottle. Before the first filling, shorten it with a sharp knife or scissors using a diagonal cut so that it ends just above the bottom. A long tube bends inside the packaging and the pump then draws poorly.

Good to know

  • Preparation before filling – wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and let them dry completely. Residual water in the tube would dilute the first doses of cream.
  • Filling – let the emulsion cool before filling. Thin-walled plastic must be protected from heat, so never pour a hot product into it.
  • Reuse – after emptying, pump warm water through the pump until it runs clear, then disinfect and let dry. Creams containing waxes are harder to flush out of the tube, so allow for longer rinsing.
  • Essential oils and solvents – the packaging should not come into contact with aggressive chemicals. For products with a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or other solvents, therefore check how the plastic behaves in your specific formulation. Common emulsions and vegetable oils do not harm a PET bottle.
  • Contact with cosmetics – both components of the set have a declaration of suitability for cosmetic products; the documents are available with the product.
  • Recycling – the bottle is made of PET, the pump of polypropylene. Separate them before disposal so that they can be sorted individually.

Only the bottle has a separate certificate for direct food contact. The lotion pump has no such declaration, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics, not for filling with food.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber plastic 10 ml bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, the amber colour of the PET limits the amount of light reaching the contents and helps protect light-sensitive ingredients. It is not complete darkness, so still do not leave the bottle in a sunny place and use up products with sensitive active ingredients within a shorter time.
How much cream fits into the bottle with a pump?
Fill it to the nominal volume, that is 10 ml, not to the rim of the neck. The space above this level is an allowance for the pump head and the dip tube. If the bottle is filled to the neck, the screwed-on pump pushes the contents out and the cream leaks around the thread.
Can a lotion pump be used for a thin serum or toner?
It is not designed for that. The lotion pump is intended for cream and gel textures that do not run out of the tube on their own. A watery serum or toner drips from it and a single dose is hard to estimate. For thin contents, a bottle with a fine mist sprayer or a dropper is more suitable.
Can the bottle and pump set be washed and used again?
Yes, both the bottle and the pump can be reused. Rinse the pump by pumping warm water through it until it runs clear, wash the bottle and disinfect both parts with alcohol or IPA. They must be completely dry before new filling, otherwise residual water will dilute the cream and shorten its shelf life.
Is the plastic bottle and lotion pump set suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the amber PET bottle has a separate declaration of suitability for direct food contact. The black lotion pump has no such certificate, so the bottle must not be used for food products together with it.
Why does the pump on the 10 ml bottle not dispense?
The most common cause is a dip tube that is too long, which has bent in the low bottle and does not draw the contents from the bottom. Shorten the tube with a diagonal cut so that it ends just above the bottom. Rinsing the pump with warm water also helps if residue of cream from the previous filling has dried inside it.
