Product description

The amber plastic pharmaceutical bottle with a volume of 10 ml and an aluminium cap is designed for small quantities of cosmetics: samples of serums and facial oils, travel packs, trial batches of a new recipe, or blends that you want to hand out for testing. Amber PET filters light, so contents that are sensitive to sunlight, such as an oil serum with vitamins or an alcohol-based tincture, keep better than in clear packaging. The plastic is lightweight and does not break when dropped, which you will appreciate when carrying such a small bottle in a handbag or when travelling.

The set is supplied as a whole: both the bottle and the silver cap are declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The bottle on its own also has a certificate for direct food contact, but the cap does not, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic products.

What it is suitable for

  • Samples and testers – 10 ml is enough to try a serum, oil or toner for several days. The volume is also small enough for the contents to be used up before they start to lose quality.
  • Travel packs – the lightweight bottle with a firmly screwed-on cap does not break and takes up little space.
  • Oil blends and serums – amber plastic helps protect oils that are sensitive to oxidation from light.
  • Alcohol extracts and tinctures – the amber colour protects plant ingredients from fading.
  • Trial batches during recipe development – the small volume allows you to set aside a sample from each batch and observe how it behaves over time.

How the set seals and dispenses

The silver aluminium cap has an EPE foam liner inside, which sits on the neck when the cap is screwed on and seals the contents. The cap is matched to the neck of the bottle, so you do not need to worry about the combination. Tighten it by hand, without force: the foam seals even when only lightly tightened and may become deformed under excessive pressure.

The packaging has no dropper or dispensing insert, so the contents are poured or dripped directly from the neck. With thin oils and aqueous solutions, expect the dose to be imprecise. If you need to dispense drop by drop, the Handymade range includes closures with the same neck type as well as ready-made packaging and closure combinations. With your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the neck or in the liner dilutes the contents and, in leave-on products, increases the risk of microbial contamination.

Nominal and total volume

The volume of 10 ml is nominal, that is, the volume the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The physical volume up to the rim of the neck is slightly larger. The difference provides a reserve for the cap and its liner and space for the contents to expand with changes in temperature. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim: an overfilled bottle pushes the contents onto the thread when the cap is screwed on, and the cap then stops sealing.

Good to know

PET is not suitable for hot filling. Let emulsions and oil blends cool to room temperature before pouring them in, otherwise the plastic may become deformed. With concentrated essential oils, fragrance compositions and solvents, we recommend a compatibility test: leave part of the contents in the packaging for several weeks and check whether the plastic turns cloudy or soft, or whether the contents change in scent.

Do not expose the packaging to aggressive chemicals. If the formulation contains strong acids or alkalis, check that the foam liner and the aluminium of the cap are not damaged over time.

The bottle can be reused if you wash it thoroughly after emptying and disinfect it again. Amber plastic does not show residue deposits as well as clear plastic, so check the neck and base against the light. For recycling, the bottle goes with plastics as PET; unscrew the aluminium cap and dispose of it with metals.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 10 ml plastic pharmaceutical bottle with an aluminium cap suitable for essential oils?
Yes for diluted blends, but we recommend testing undiluted essential oils first. The bottle is made of PET, and some concentrated essential oils or fragrance compositions may turn the plastic cloudy or soften it after a longer time. Leave a sample in the packaging for several weeks and check the condition of the plastic as well as the scent of the contents. Do not expose the packaging to aggressive chemicals at all.
Does the amber plastic pharmaceutical bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber PET filters light and slows the deterioration of ingredients that are sensitive to sunlight. It is therefore suitable for oils prone to oxidation, alcohol extracts with plant colorants and serums with vitamins. It does not replace full protection, however, so store the packaging away from direct sunlight.
Can a hot emulsion be filled into the 10 ml plastic pharmaceutical bottle?
No, PET is not designed for hot filling. Let the emulsion or melted oil blend cool to room temperature before pouring it in, otherwise the bottle may become deformed. This also applies to warm alcohol extracts after filtration.
Is the set of plastic pharmaceutical bottle and aluminium cap approved for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the plastic bottle on its own has a certificate for direct food contact; the aluminium cap with the foam liner does not. If you need packaging for homemade oils or syrups, choose a closure for the bottle that has its own declaration of suitability for food.
How do I prepare the plastic pharmaceutical bottle before the first filling?
Wash it with warm water and washing-up liquid, rinse it, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely. Treat the cap, including the foam liner, in the same way. Residual moisture in the neck or in the liner would dilute the contents and, in leave-on products, increase the risk of microbial contamination.
Why is the 10 ml plastic pharmaceutical bottle not filled to the brim?
Because the volume of 10 ml is nominal, and a reserve must remain above it for the cap and the expansion of the contents. If you fill up to the neck, the screwed-on cap pushes part of the contents onto the thread, the liner becomes contaminated and the packaging stops sealing. Fill to the nominal volume and wipe the neck before closing.
